Me and Me and Orson Welles 10:23pm on 27 Nov 2009 Let The Right One In made me smile because out of all the rubbish out there, I'm glad films like Let The Right One In come along.

It is a tender film, that, although not in the literal sense is a "feel-good film", it made me feel good that I was watching a great film and probably the best film of the year. I hope that you agree.
The Best Christmas Movie Ever 4:59pm on 15 Nov 2009 There are a lot of dark Christmas films that seem to be up in the Best Christmas Films Ever Made.

For me, the obvious choice is Brazil because in the future, there are no chimneys, all Christmas decorations are set against grey dystopian landscape and my favourite Santa in a padded cell. For me, that is a good old cynical Christmas Carol.

I was at the Ely Cathedral Q&A with Michael Palin, and even he says it's a Christmas film the whole family should cuddle around and watch.

The worst Christmas film for me has to be Fred Claus, which is a demented, rotten lump of coal.

Now that I think of it, the trailer for William Friedkin's Bug builds up to something that is pretty generic for a horror film trailer. Flashy edits, ascending soundtrack, and shallow footage which links many other generic horror film trailers (such as Saw). However, the film (although unsettling) does not have go as madcap as the trailer suggests. The film gradually builds up towards insanity on behalf of the characters, not the "bugs". The horror and the insanity is more psychological than visceral.

The set up of 'they feed on your brain' suggests something more literal, which I think is misleading towards the film itself.
The Revisitations of Doctor Kermode 1:26pm on 13 Oct 2009 For me, the latest film I saw that I couldn't judge the first time was Lars Von Trier's Antichrist. Part of it was to do with the influence Lars Von Trier has had on me in the past (and not in a good way).

As you said, I hated Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, Dancer in the Dark and The Boss of it All. However, when it came to seeing it the first time, I felt like snooting at the film. The second time, I started to admire the film a lot more and that my judgement of Lars Von Trier was the only thing keeping me from liking it the first time.

Another film that demanded a second viewing was The Piano, because I fell asleep half way through the first time. The second time, I was awake long enough to laugh at the scene where she gets dragged by the piano
The Greatest Megabudget Movie Ever Made 11:57am on 29 Sep 2009 Dear Dr. K,

I bring up the subject about Batman Begins, because although it had a multi-million dollar budget it had (as you said) the tendencies of an independent film. While this is on the issue about whether a budget is characteristic of its film, could this be the most dynamic use of multi-million dollar budget?

I saw the film at the cinema and as you said, I was impressed, but I wasn't quite sure. From what I could see it did allude to such films such as Mulholland Drive and most of all Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.

To convince me, this film is one that (a cliché, I know) has to be seen again and again. I do agree that if there was any film that really caught me off guard this year, Helen is probably it.

I'd say that and Sleep Furiously are small gems that are worth a second life.

Not that I want you to go, but here are a couple of suggestions;

Dragonball: Evolution, which was demonstrably dull.

and

Terminator Salvation, which was a headache of a film.

It may be just me, but as much as there have been some good films this year, I am starting to worry about next year. Also, here's some discouraging news, Michael Bay is lined up to make another Bad Boys film. I do hope you stay on because I do not want to be the only one who thinks The Hangover is "The best comedy of the year".
A Night at the Movies with the Doc! 5:11pm on 26 Aug 2009 Can you do another post of you watching Let the Right One In or Pan's Labyrinth? Just to restore our faith in cinema..? I feel depressed watching a mirrored reaction to when I watch dung such as Transformers 2 or Dance Flick.

The worst is when I have sit with a bunch of adolescent teenagers who find White Chicks or Meet the Spartans funny. While this happens, my face melts and my posture sinks. Oh, and The Hurt Locker is on limited screens while this happens.

Hopefully, you'll find that The Hurt Locker will put a smile on your face. Hopefully...
