You are quite right of course. Technically, it was our money that was used to secretly back the banks. Although, the BofE was acting in its role as lender of the last resort which is, I think, still within its remit. The Lloyds shareholders however were asked to vote on an issue when very important information was being withheld. I'm no lawyer (Nor a Lloyds shareholder - thank goodness) but this does not seem right to me!

Unlike you Steve, I do not feel qualified to comment on Mr Osborne's economic capabilities as I do not have evidence one way or the other. There is no doubt that he lacks experience, given his age and the amount of time that he has been in parliament. I do take confidence however in the fact that he has Ken Clarke there to mentor him. He does have bags of experience. Whilst you will no doubt disagree with me, I think that many on this blog and elsewhere, most of whom are cleverer than me, believe that he did a good job in a Government that was on the wane. More than you can say for Mr Darling in my opinion. Mr C would probably have made an excellent PM had he not, for some reason, backed the EU horse.

By the way, I do think that walking where possible is preferable to driving. Saves me money, keeps me fit and reduces my carbon footprint. A triple win. It is a pity that it is probably not possible for a minister or his shadow to do the same at work. I do think that these people should lead by example.

Thank you for your reasoned response. I respect your views but reserve the right to disagree.

I truly believe that you and I have a desire for the same thing ie a fair and just society. We do however seem to be at variance as to how to proceed.

Still it takes two views to make a Market and I will continue to read your more reasoned postings with interest. Who knows you may even change my mind!

I was referring to National Debt. I agree that personal debt is falling. A reality check caused by the credit crunch.

As for my reasoning - I will take the easy way out. The attached says it better than my poor English can.

As for who I am. The beauty of the blog is that I can claim to be anybody I like. For what its worth, I work in the financial services industry and take an amateur interest in both politics and the economy.

How apt - panto season is upon us!
Spot the difference 9:08pm on 23 Nov 2009 Too much written about whether we are coming out of recession or not.

Given the amount of money that this Government are throwing at the economy, the big surprise will be if we have not come out of recession after the next quarter.Que mkuch trumpeting by Mr Brown and cronies.

The bigger issue is the level of debt that we, as a country have and the problems that are building within our economy for the future. If this issue is not tackled and soon we are heading for a slump that will make the Great Depression seem like a walk in the park.
