Should criminals die in prison? 7:44pm on 13 Oct 2009 Compassionate release to die in the presence of their family but they do not die "free".

They shouldn't get released until they are too weak (and there's no way back) to re-offend.

Prison these days is a joke - free meals, free board, free heating, entertainment ... all paid for by us, the tax-payers.

Life outside could be harsher. I would insist that prisoners get no state pension or state aid.
Should criminals die in prison? 7:11pm on 13 Oct 2009 Yes, release them from prison, but do not make them 'free'. Some kind of tagging and "house arrest" perhaps.

If we don't show them compassion, just because they didn't show their victim/s compassion, are we not just lowering our standards to their level ?

It has another positive benefit, in that it frees up another prison cell for another violent offender.

Indeed ... change needs to happen - the Rich nations need to reduce their consumption whilst the others "catch up". Can they do that without reducing their standard of living ?

If change doesn't happen by voluntary processes, population control will happen by means of wars, natural disasters, pandemics etc.

Yes, that is true at the moment, but when the world population reaches 10+ billion, those developing nations will aspire to have what the developed nations have and their resource use will increase. This is already happening in China, where diets are changing with more meat being consumed; modern chinese citizens aspire to having other things like western-style flats along with their electronics etc.

As overpopulation bites, nations will end up fighting over scarce resources or the poor will starve or die from cold because the price of food/fuel has been driven up due to supply+demand.

Theoretically this should limit the population.
What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Sir David Attenborough 7:15pm on 13 May 2009 You cannot stop global warming unless you adopt a "one mother, one child" approach, so that over the next few generations the world population contracts.

The current world population growth rate is unsustainable - each human exhales 350-450g of carbon dioxide a day (~146kg per year) adding to the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels.

As the human population expands, it will need more resources to house, feed, cloth and entertain it.

Direct water metering is something that we should oppose as it will drive those with large families or those who are already poor through the threshold that represented the slums of the Victorian era.

Water is essential to life and clean water and decent sewerage systems account for more saved lives than all the medicines put together. There has to be an accepted quantity of water (somewhere between 100 - 160 litres per day per person) which is sufficient to maintain decent hygiene standards.

If the water companies want to reduce non-essential water consumption they should consider a two tier charging structure where any water used above the accepted value is charged at a higher tariff and any water consumed below the accepted value charged at a fixed rate which is affordable to the poorest of families. This of course means that we have to submit accurate household numbers.

The dangers of direct metering is that we will keep cutting back to attempt to keep costs down. When we cut back, the water companies make less profit, so the metered price has to go up causing us to try and cut back more. Poorer people cannot cut back without falling into the hygiene trap. We are now in the 21st century, are we sure we want the return of cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc ?

So much for progress!!!
How should MPs be paid? 7:27pm on 03 Apr 2009 The expenses system should be changed to one that is equitable, reasonable and fair. MPs wanted to be MPs - this is no different to any other job. If commuting is part of the job, commute - most people can't claim travelling expenses for going to work!

They must only claim what is necessary and not "because it is allowed". MPs should view expenses as items that "may be re-imbursed". This way there is a risk that if they go OTT they won't get their money back.

To avoid those expensive 5* hotel suites being put on expenses, how about halls of residence ?

And whilst we are at it, is it possible to find out how much time an MP spends actually working ?
