Toyota exit shifts F1 balance of power 12:42pm on 05 Nov 2009 Losing all the big players has to worry the FIA. No matter who comes in to replace them, they won't have the necessary pedigree to wow the crowds.

If you look back at the BTCC in the late 90s it was booming with heavy manufacturer involvement. When the big manufacturers left- either to the WTCC or completely out of the sport- the series took a massive nose-dive and it's still nowhere near what it used to be. I can really see F1 going that way unless something dramatic changes.

F1 is also losing its way from its core market. The far eastern races are great for a novelty factor, but how many of them are sustainable in the long term? The fans aren't going to them, especially in Turkey, and the teams hate them because they can't take their European transporters with them.
Skipper Sinfield sets the standards 9:45pm on 11 Oct 2009 Saints fans complaining about dodgy refereeing decisions? I don't know how they have the cheek to try and claim that the refs are biased against them. They've always had the rub of the green far beyond any other club in the modern era, I've lost count of the number of times the Bulls have been robbed against Saints.

Leeds won because they were the better side. They fully deserved their win. Sinfield is a legend of the modern game and fully deserves his success.

Compare the dignity of Sinfield with Sean Long, a man so without morals that he actually bet on his own team to lose. And then understand why, as a Bulls fan, I can admire Leeds and their success.
Button back on song in title chase 11:06am on 14 Sep 2009 I love the way that whenever we get a British world champion it's because of the car and not because of the drivers being very good. Hamilton was a worthy champion last year and, if Button wins this year, he will be a worthy champion too.

The world championship is a combination of the best driver and the best car, of course it is- a crap driver won't win the title in the best car and the best driver won't win the title in a crap car. But it's odd that when Button does well it's the car and when he does badly it's the driver. Just as it is with Hamilton. No, they're both very talented drivers and deserve their success.

What makes me laugh are all these armchair pontificators who decree who's good and who's bad. Stick any of these people in a Brawn GP car and they wouldn't even be able to get out of the pit lane- look at Richard Hammond in the Renault F1.
Chelsea will suffer if transfer ban stands 6:09pm on 03 Sep 2009 It is a can of worms that is going to cause a lot of mess when it's opened. But good, that's how it should be. All the big clubs have always behaved like this, and it's high time that they were punished for it.

If anything, Chelsea's punishment should have been harsher. And congratulations to FIFA for understanding that punishments shouldn't be financial, because they mean nothing to the big clubs. Hit them really where it hurts: stop them signing players and boot them out of the Champions League.
Ted Kravitz - the German GP from the pit lane 3:47pm on 23 Jul 2009 I don't think Rubens can complain too much about the team's handling of the race when it was his poor start that put him back in the pack to begin with.

Poor start? The guy beat the pole sitter to the first corner and was leading the race!

emanueljanuary, you mention Webber apologising for 'bumping' Hamilton - note there was no penalty, unlike the Rubens incident - this would have to be because it wouldn't have happened if Hamilton hadn't been completely off course in the first place due to his unmanageable entry to the corner. He's a liabilty.

I don't think any F1 driver, least of all an Australian F1 driver, would admit liability for something that wasn't their fault.

Hamilton was faster because of his KERS and he was clearly going to be able to stop for the first corner. The fact that he got round the first corner with a puncture proves that.

But then I forget that so many people seem to want Hamilton to fail. I don't understand why at all. He's British and he's fast, what's with the hatred?
Champions go back to front 3:29pm on 23 Jul 2009 A good driver won't win in a bad car, but it doesn't follow that a bad driver will win in a good car. Schumacher didn't always have the best car in the field- certainly in 1995 the Williams was much better than the Benetton.

It's strange how it's only in F1 that people whinge about it being more about the car. You never hear people slagging off McCoy or Dettori for having no talent, even though it's the horse that does all the work.
Fixture and frettings 09:45am on 18 Jun 2009 Hull stayed up, all credit to them, but they're the worst team to have ever avoided relegation. Derby need to start worrying: I think their points record is under threat.

Is Owen still worth a gamble? 2:25pm on 16 Jun 2009 Owen's always had the quality but he doesn't have any fitness. Worse, in the end at Newcastle he didn't even look like he wanted to have any fitness. He looked a broken man and he didn't look bothered.

After all that money he took from Newcastle he owes them another season. He didn't try in the last matches and that's why they went down. He owes them a season on a pay-as-you-play deal but Owen's never been too hot on loyalty. Look how he treated Liverpool when he moved to Real.
Hamilton releases the pressure 2:36pm on 11 Jun 2009 It's strange how good drivers make their cars look good, though.

When Schumacher won in 1994 everyone said it was because his Benetton B194 was miles better than anything else on the grid. It was only afterwards that the team explained that actually it was a nervous twitchy car and that's why the second driver couldn't do anything with it. When Hamilton won last year everyone reckoned the McLaren was the best on the grid, except most people now realise it was very very twitchy and nervous.

If you want to go back to real domination because of a car, you have to look at Mansell's win in 1992. The FW14 still sets the benchmark, it's still the best F1 car ever made by quite a long way. But even then Mansell had to drive the thing to victory, something I couldn't have done.

I actually don't think the Brawn is any better than the Red Bull. It probably was in Australia but there's really nothing in it now. The difference is that Button keeps the car on the tarmac and Vettel doesn't. Newey is the best designer in F1 today and he's designed a peach of a car.
Milan to Madrid via Manchester 10:01am on 09 Jun 2009 I love the way people assume that, because it's Real Madrid, the money hasn't come from debt. It wasn't all that many years ago that Real had to be bailed out by the corporation of Madrid otherwise they'd have gone bankrupt.
