Benitez faces biggest test 09:45am on 21 Oct 2009 Everyone knew and said from the beginning that if Torres and/or Gerrard were injured then they'd struggle. Two players can't carry a team to the title. It's happened and I don't see them recovering...

Has anyone won the title over the last 10 years without an unshakeable Centre-back pairing? Another thing missing at the moment.

Though, who knows, Aquilani could emerge a football genius and score 50 goals this season!

I'm yet to be convinced by the new city defence though, so I'd have to say united for the win. It should be a pretty interesting game.
Real deals put La Roja in the shade 08:14am on 08 Sep 2009 I hadn't heard about Daniel Jarque. That's incredibly sad; I thought things like that weren't meant to be able to happen any more in professional football with all the medical scans and the preparation that players go through.

I doubt Real will set the world on fire this season; they need longer to set up some good defensive partnerships. The very top teams can't leak goals like Real inevitably will... Have to wait and see!

The private life of Rio Ferdinand 2:07pm on 24 Apr 2009 I'm a big admirer of Rio and enjoyed reading the interview. It's great to see that he's so switched on and conscientious, especially as he's such a huge role model to so many kids.

I agree with #3 and a lot of others in that he should be England skipper, but I guess Capello knows his stuff better than me!
Shearer gets taste of reality 3:30pm on 05 Apr 2009 Remember when Ashley got all upset because Keegan said it was impossible for Newcastle to break into the top four? Goes to show how out of touch Ashley is with modern football.

Shearer is proven as an inspirational leader in football. He might not be the most eloquent of guys but neither is Steven Gerrard and look at the effect he has on a team as a leadership figure. Shearer doesn't need to be brilliant tactically; he has staff to help him out there. He is there as an impact personality to inspire a flagging team.

As for Owen and Martins as a strike team...I've seen the best of Martins when Owen is off the pitch, but then again they haven't had much time to work up a partnership with Owen being injured most of the time.
England still need Owen 4:08pm on 30 Mar 2009 If Beckham can make a comeback at his age there's always a chance for Owen. Bring on the old guard.

I do agree with previous comments about how Owen should be moving clubs in the summer. He needs to be playing in Europe for a club that has a world class medical centre.

Wonder if he'll ever end up back at Liverpool...
