A comical take 1:45pm on 17 Jun 2009 Guess the Chinese government is getting "clever" when dealing with foreign journalist. Its better than getting physical and try to remove you from the square. Imagine what a big fuss that will be. Its a classic example of "soft treatment". However this takes the fun out of your coverage. Better luck next time.
Facing swine flu scrutiny 10:27am on 29 May 2009 I actually appreciate the seriousness of Chinese health authority with regards to the H1N1 virus. China is a heavily populated country. Virus such as this one will spread quickly if no effective control is implemented. People who are complaining about the inconvenience of all the safety procedures can only be called selfish. People who are currently infected with the virus without knowing it will also benefit from these tests and procedures, since early detection is always beneficial. Well Done.
When does old age begin? 1:11pm on 26 May 2009 Like I said earlier in my post. *Lao* or *Xiao* are just prefix. Most people use them without the intention of acknowledge that persons experience or knowledge. They are also sometime used between husband and wife. For example. Lao Puo (wife) and Lao Gong (husband) are frequently used as endearments between married couples. I dont think they are really acknowledging each others experience or knowledge every time they address each other. :)
When does old age begin? 1:17pm on 18 May 2009 There isnt really a definite age definition for Lao or Xiao. Its purely a prefix used in front of a persons surname to address him/her. If a person who is older than you address you, he will probably use Xiao, while a younger person who is addressing you will probably use Lao.

The only time you tend to see a government official with grey hair is if he has been arrested and put on trial - where he is deprived both of his freedom and, apparently, his hair dye.

Image has become more and more important not only for government officials, but also for ordinary Chinese people. Guess people are more image conscious nowadays. Who knows, hair transplant will be next on the list. Beauty is only skin deep after all.
Hair dye will probably be the last thing on his/her mind, when he/she is arrested for corruption charges etc. BTW, dont criminals have to shave their head or at least keep their hair very short while in jail? Whats the point of hair dye??
Still searching for answers 2:15pm on 12 May 2009 "It's not just the earthquake that made the building collapse," insists Fu Xuezhong, "but the government can't acknowledge that fact. It would bring out a lot of other troubles. They will never acknowledge it."

While I am in South Africa, I heard in the news on the radio that the Chinese government has acknowledged that the cause of some school collapsing is due to poor construction problem, while others are not. Has this acknowledgement not made public in China, but only internationally. Or is it error reporting in South Africa. The government should acknowledge the poor construction quality of these schools, and held the construction companies liable. Avoiding this matter will not solve the problem. These parents only wish to obtain some sort of justice for their childrens death. By holding irresponsible construction companies and connected personnel liable will give these parents a sense of justice. By harassing parents to avoid petition is adding oil to the fire, causing more outrage. Hope the Chinese leaders will wake up someday.

But thats what happened. Governments response for last years earthquake was quick and compassionate. They did not try to cover it up or underplay it, they asked for international assistance immediately. They were not worried about saving their FACE.

The Premier, Wen Jiabao, was cast as the noble hero - the leader who cried with the bereaved and who promised that fallen towns would one day rise again.

What would you like him to do?? Laugh in the face of the family who lost their family, and tell them that their future is doomed. Hope is important for us to go through difficult times.
Any normal person would cry in face of such unfortunate event, and try to give people hope. I cried while reading news report about the earthquake on the internet would you then tell me that I am trying to act as a noble hero. What has happened to normal human compassion for each other? Has it become so rare in life, that people now even take showing of true emotion as acting?

I agree 100% with what you mentioned in your comment. Parents, school and the education system is driving these poor kids to the edge.

Something interesting I would like to mention:
Most of my western schoolmates also do not know how to cook, iron or hang pictures equilibrium. Wonder where they spent their extra time, while the Chinese are studying piano, Japanese and math. Mostly they are stuck in clubs and pubs. Not sure it's the best choice either.

Some of them don't even know how to change tires, even though most of tertiary students drives a car of some sort, so what is their excuse. At least most of Chinese students don't have the luxury of cars.
A case of stolen identity 12:36pm on 08 May 2009 The high university entrance mark is mainly caused by high volume of student, with little high standard tertiary education entity.
Therefore the few high standard university only takes the cream of the crop, leaving many others without any hope of entrance.
I believe, the government should put more attention on develop more high standard university to accommodate our students who wish to obtain tertiary education.
Generally, Chinese families value their children's education on top of the list. Thus the competition is very high. Some family do not wish to bury their kids potential in this cruel education system, and choose to send them overseas, where competition is less aggressive. Thats why so many overseas Chinese students although with many language barriers still succeed in their tertiary education and future career.
A case of stolen identity 12:15pm on 08 May 2009 I feel sorry for the Chinese students who have to study for 12 years just for this precious university exam entrance ticket.
I have been there and done it. Why must the education department in China set the standard of Math/Science as well as the entrance marks so high? Not every student wishes to become a scientist or engineer. I have seen so many students get turned away by Universities because they could not meet these high standards, but many of them still have great potentials.
Teenagers should not be put under such pressure and be allowed to enjoy their teenage years, without too much burden of academics.
Let them have the chance of tertiary education and study the professions that they enjoy. Why should a persons potential be decided by his/her high school academics.
International research shows that people who do great in life are academic achievers during their tertiary education, NOT during their high school years.
Education department is making decisions too soon for these young people.

The western countries change their support toward Tibet's independence to their own benefit. Last year it was Britain, now it's France.

Makes me wonder if they are truly in support and believes in Tibet independence, or are they just using Tibet issue to get what they want from China.
