Ulster aim to follow up on Ospreys win 11:43pm on 27 Sep 2009 Decent start made and I can't see us being too badly affected by international duty and the like. Still don't see us beating Munster or Leinster, with a top 5/6 finish highly possible...
McGinley is Ryder Cup skipper in waiting 6:19pm on 27 Sep 2009 Highly impressed with the showing from the GB & I team. We have a lot of good golfers hitting excellent form at the right time. McIlroy and McDowell must surely now be forerunners in Monty's mind, and I was vastly impressed with Chris Wood's performance - a player who I have been very skeptical about in recent years. I also think we can probably say with confidence that unless Poulter qualifies he will not be playing in Wales next year.

McGinley is unlikely to make the team, though with some decent form who knows, but his skill and management qualities must surely put him in Monty's mind as an assistant

(invisiblehandadvisor). Accordingly I'm skipping all the technical stuff and jumping into my main and most important point (which I'm reasonably sure you all haven't mentioned yet...

G Brown was never ever elected by the people as PM. His 3 years in charge have certainly been difficult, but it shows the flaw in our political system - that we weren't able to put in charge the right person to manage it. Gordon has been way out of his depths for the last year or so. Labour should have got rid of them when they had the chance.

No. 3 gjowen. I think you're right, Monty could be slightly guilty of mismanagement, but I certainly know, that if I were to pick the team, I would be picking out the likely candidates at this stage as well. The mistake Monty has made is telling everyone that he has

No. 5 jockneyboy I'd forgotten the vice captain is still to be picked, so in this respect I might take Clarke out of my 12 and put him in here. I fully expect him to play some part next year though
Monty pencils in Celtic Manor dozen 5:33pm on 26 Aug 2009 Would be very intrigued to see Monty's list. His comments just after the selection of the previous cup last year were very interesting. This coupled with the fact he now has 3 Wild Card picks, could leave a few boys dissappointed when the 12 are announced. I wouldn't be surprised to see some RC veterans as his wild card picks, i.e the likes of Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley or Jiminez. Their form of course, will have to improve in the next year.

For the record my 12 (in no particular order) would be; Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey, Ross Fisher, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke, Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer.

Can't wait till next year, fingers crossed the Ryder Cup will be coming back were it belongs.
Ancelotti's song and dance 7:49pm on 15 Aug 2009 Have to be honest maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but even though Ancelotti has got 2 wins from 2 I'm far from convinced Chelsea can be a real force this season. Both wins were highly fortunate though they probably did enough to deserve it today. The diamond formation strikes me as very out dated, and as for placing Lampard at the top of it? Not sure he apparently gets 30 less touches of the ball this way, just for him being that little bit further forward. Sacrificing his passing and his skill in holding up the ball seems to me to suggest a touch a naivity on the part of old Carlo. Glad to see the Premiership back! 3 horse race again this year (despite Arsenal obliterating Everton) Chelsea, Liverpool and United. I can see it being a lot closer as well with the absence of Ronaldo and Alonso. 2 key players to both clubs. A lot of Chelsea have under performed the last few seasons Drogba in particular, they have a lot to prove this time around...

Can't speak for Wales, don't know what their youth rugby players are like. Ireland have some great backs ready to break through in the next few years. Forwards wise the situation is little more worrying. I am hopeful though...
Battle for 2015 4:18pm on 28 Jul 2009 Well there you have it, all hype and speculation can now cease! Let's hope England and Japan can do a good job. At least for 2015 we Irish won't have that far to travel to watch our side triumph! I would question as well if this will have any impact on the FA's bid's for the football World Cup. Thoughts?

On a separate note I wonder is it perhaps a bit too soon to be handing out the 2019 WC to Japan. It mightn't exist if Kim Jong Il has his way - bad taste?
Final flourish leaves Lions lamenting what might have been 00:00am on 09 Jul 2009 True story about the rain I have yet to be at a dry Ulster match in my 9 or so years off attending. In fact the only time I haven't been saturated watching rugby at Ravenhill is when the Schools Cup is on. Bad Times.

Sadly not much to speak of I'm afeared. We have no one who could step into the brink with any real conviction if god forbid Hayes or Horan gets injured or retires. The only tangible replacement is Tom Court and he's 28, hardly a long term replacement. He did feature in the 6 nations though. Aside from him the likes of Tony Buckley (Munster), Mike Ross (Harlequins) and Bryan Young (Ulster) all toured with the Ireland team in Canada and the US recently. None really did anything special to impress me. I'm assured by my friends though that Young is likely to improve this season and challenge for a national spot come the autumn. Lets just say I'm not holding my breath. Both he and Buckley also toured and triumphed with Ireland A a few weeks ago. Also on that tour was Leinster prop Cian Healy, don't hold out much hope for him either though. Indeed I remember seeing highlights of a Munster Vs Leinster game this season where Healy was actually handed off by Earls, Earls then went on to score. However at 21 he is the youngest, and therefore most likely long term replacement.

T'is worrying times though, to be sure...

I think my argument was of the influx of foreign players into our leagues in general not just the GP, apologies if I came across otherwise. I'm an Ulster fan so this may not come across as expert but I'll do my best.

Leinster will find it difficult next season, and it will be interesting to see if they concentrate their efforts on retaining the HC or challenging for the ML title. They've lost 2 massive players in Contepomi and Rocky Elsom. Whilst the Irish have good depth regarding the 10 shirt our props are probably the weakest positions with neither Hayes or Horan doing anything spectacular. Tom Court looks like a good player, but at 28 is he past his best to make any lasting impact? Not sure

Munster are okay really as far as foreigners are concerned. Only Mafi or Howlett spring to mind and they play in the back line where Ireland are pretty much covered, in every position.
