Who deserves a New Year's Honour? 09:09am on 28 Nov 2009 On "Today" today (Sat AM) there was a story about "lock in" - after viral brain damage a 12 year old boy was to spend 10 years conscious but paralysed in care. He was diagnosed with a mental age of 3 months.

Then a new care worker got involved and, despite opposition, established communication. There was enough evidence to warrant purchase of computer aid, the young man is now a married web designer and there are calls for a review of all similar cases.

That's a great difference for one person to make yet I was disappointed that the name of the dedicated care worker was not even mentioned. Of course, possibly she prefers it that way. But otherwise I'd really appreciate it if PM could dig a little and get her side of the story.

Isn't this exactly the kind of instance you're looking for as deserving of some honour?

The Eyes Have It 6:23pm on 27 Nov 2009 I don't know about you, but I don't think cricket adequately reflects the gritty reality of today's world. It's still mired in Victorian convention: its teams and bats and balls reflect an essentially imperialist view of sport. I've just written a new cricket match, which I hope evokes a kind of universal yearning for freedom. It's set in a large refrigerator which houses a grasshopper with diarrhoea. The resonance of the grasshopper, which evokes the cricket while remaining intriguingly other, is reinforced by a host of highly individual associations, pointing to the ultimate futility of "getting the runs".

I spent most of my time trying to cut my way out of thickets of mixed metaphor and freeing my ankles from the convolutions of phrases.

But I have returned with treasure. It turns out that things will go better if people do their jobs and look after their money. But there's no point trying to make them, or who knows what may go wrong?

Or to put it more clearly, former experiences both require and will be corrected by the oversight of proper performance, as and when it can be achieved in the given set of circumstances going forward, relating to the board and other interested parties, as to the extent of their duties with a view to securing the proper and indeed impartial functioning of the primary goals set by such, with a view to the avoidance of losses of finance incumbent upon them, although such an outcome cannot, should not and with a bit of luck will not in any sense respond to any injunction, code or act originated with a view to the securing thereof, for that it may invoke unintended consequences which, though it may perhaps be said to form a part of the afore-stated obligations of the above-referred-to parties to discern these and similar possibilities, nevertheless is unlikely

I feel my version of the theme really explored many issues around issues impacting on the reality of a Victorian servant's life. All that trouble, throwing the servant girl upstairs and downstairs for eight hours, cut up and put through a ring modulator - and they have the nerve to ask me to cut it down to 20 seconds!)

"The question plainly is whether political beliefs as expressed in avant-garde music can have any effect.

The composer's answer? "It's incumbent upon artists, upon composers, to try and be more explicit in relating music to everything else that is going on in the world.""

Then what is the composer? A high priest, to reveal to us all the pain and suffering and deep truth that he, in his sublime sensitivity, perceives and feels, that we poor sinners are too thick to notice?

That is crazy - that we should overlook the reality and yet notice an allegory, a working model. As if "I never realised what a train was until I saw a kid pretending to be a train".

Maybe it is just for the composer to work out his own thoughts and feelings? A kind of catharsis, a psycho-therapy? That's great, but why load it upon the rest of us?

In what way do we find "explicit relation to everything else" in Bach, or Indian classical music, or African dance, or plainchant? Is our new understanding so unique, that we alone have realised that art is not meant to bring happiness, health, togetherness, a glimpse of pure reason.... but rather to wallow in politics?

If that is the case, then just one thing: why has the public deserted modern music? A hundred years ago, ordinary people would flock to the new releases of Elgar or Kipling, who refined and informed popular taste. The new intellectual has in fact deserted humanity, withdrawn into his own hermetic neurosis and left the world to the Spice Girls.
