Pylons pile the costs onto the bills 11:04pm on 06 Jan 2010 Yes this all costs money, but you cannot grow and progress as a country or business without investment in the future. We need to make more strategic long term investments to progress as a country especially in generating renewable energy. Far too often we are held back by endless planning reviews and lack of commitment on investments such as tidal and wave power generation and cutting the Glasgow rail link,
Changing leader? 10:39pm on 06 Jan 2010 Gordon may be a hopeless leader and responsible for much of the economic mess but these people had their opportunity previously and failed to take their chance; Perhaps they were all too busy fiddling their expense claims to worry about having the right people to run the country
Bumper bonuses mean bumper tax 12:08pm on 04 Jan 2010 I'm not a banker but as other people say, I suspect these knee-jerk reactions will cause adverse effects; just as when Brown grabbed money from Oil companies earlier in his term and in effect stopped future development of North sea oil, destroying many jobs in Scotland and making the UK more dependent on foreign oil, gas and energy. If you tax excessively people and companies just move elsewhere and in the end you just make UK even poorer. We need to focus and develop growth opportunities with those countries that are growing positively i.e. Asia, India, China, etc.
Gordon Brown's 'slip, denial and defensiveness' 8:29pm on 03 Jan 2010 Gordon Brown still cannot admit as a leader of one of top economies for 12 years that he has any responsibility for the economy mess, let alone admit cuts to public services and jobs. Now he is going to run up more debts and waste more of our money by running a 6 month election campaign; God help us from these money grabbing, incompetent politicians.
Britain - the digital champion? 8:43pm on 17 Dec 2009 What is this, some talk up the UK propaganda! UK is way behind Asia, let alone our major European competitors. In Asia they have adopted fibre optic to house, apartments are rated on speed of Internet connection and Wi-fi is mostly free in shopping malls, coffee shops and other public areas These governments realise IT and IT skills are the future enablers of business and wealth generation; you see it in the people in coffee shops working on laptops conducting phone calls and business. Our Government is just useless; no vision or strategy, no wonder we are becoming just an industrial museum
Walking the line 1:02pm on 10 Dec 2009 They are paralised by indecision; hence the fiddling with Bingo tax cut when we needed strong and clear leadership with future investments for renewable energy and high tech manufacturing - They are spending less on Innovation etc than wasted, rushed and ill-conceived 400 Million on car scrappage.
Efficiency trap 10:24pm on 07 Dec 2009 We all know what ends up happening is they simply cut jobs and luckly for Gordon Brown, he can blame that on the agencies and quangos. So we will see hosipitals facing debts and nursing cuts, police forces reducing numbers, etc. All the susposed productivy gains from badly run & specified IT projects never materialise. In IT world they should focus on open source and re-using sucessful solutions for other countries. They need to focus on investments that reduce long term costs and promote jobs and growth; such as renewable power projects like Severn barrage, reform the planning system to speed up wind, wave etc. Bring forward High speed rail links, and restore Glasgow airport link
New name for a new economy? 4:58pm on 14 Nov 2009 The reasons to keep governments out of general business is because politicians and their appointees are historically appalling at running businesses, subject to corruption and neopothism. Governments should be working and helping to set overall strategy, simplifying red-tape, speeding up planning processes and helping supporting & funding national imperatives. Unfortunately we have seen this government getting more involved in the first area and less in the second. e.g. Car scrappage short term measure and waste of money; lack of strategic plan has led to panic over electicity production, forcing down path of French nuclear power. They should have reformed planning permission for national imperative of renewable power 12 years ago, got on with Severn barrage, improved benefits for micro power production, to diversify generation and reduce outage risk from natural and terrorism risk
Copenhagen's climate change battle 1:53pm on 31 Oct 2009 Amazing the man who has done so little for UK renewable energy or CO2 reduction over past 12 years, declares another triumph. How many times have we seen Brown and his government practice "save a penny to waste a pound". Subsidies for opencast coal mining, with vain hope Clean coal power will come to rescue, lack investment and fixing planning system for Wind, Severn Barrage, tidal schemes and other renewables; Even the last wind turbine manufacturer shuts down, so we have to spend billions on French nuclear power in a rush to avoid power shortages by 2014... the examples of lack of vision, drive and strategy for UK goes on and on.
Danish PM issues plea for leaders to attend Copenhagen talks 09:00am on 30 Oct 2009 As the number two Co2 generator in Europe what has Brown and Blair done over their twelve years; We are way behind France, Germany, Spain and even Portugal on renewable energy production. We are force to buy French Nuclear power and all government can do is pin its feeble hopes on unproven clean coal. We still cannot get moving on Severn Barrage, lack investment in wave and tidal, and wind is tied up in years of planning and NIMBYs and last UK factory shut down earlier this year. To top it all our second high speed rail link is not due until 2030, what a farce. No strategy or vision.
