Night of the long grinds 08:28am on 15 Aug 2009 Brings back memories.Down here in South Africa we have a similar race based on the Fastnet,it is called the Agulhaus.You start from Royal cape Yacht Club in Cape Town Harbour on Boxing Day and round a marker at Mosselbaai and then sail back to Simonstown to get there before New Year.
It's a run usually down and a beat back.One year we were leading by miles,carrying too much and went into a "hole" and when the boat came back up we were left with no mast.Jury rigged in.
Picking an Open winner 1:09pm on 15 Jul 2009 The Open sometimes throws up a "roughie'.Recently Todd Hamilton,Ben Curtis and lets not forget how easily Jean Van der Velde was placed on the last tee of the Open before he went for a paddle.
One player who has been very quiet since the turn of the year but is starting to show form is Richard Sterne.Small outlay at big price!

Making 10 changes for the last test gave the Lions a great chance and the Lions took it with both hands and all credit to them.
Jake White said of this Bok team after they won the World Cup that they were still a young side and the best was still to come.
This is the worrying part as to my way if they had played to their full potential the difference between the two sides would have been more evident.
Unfortunately we don't have Jake White/Eddie Jones anymore,we have Mr de Villiers.
Can new-look Lions square the series? 08:02am on 26 Jun 2009 Barring injury and complete loss of form one assumes that McGeechan being a shrewd,expereienced coach had a clear picture of his Test team even before he left for South Africa.Now he makes 5 changes for the Second Test!!!
The opposition were well known to him as they contain 14 of the 2007 World Cup winning squad.
I have written that with two of the three Tests on the highveld and only one at coast level the advantage is with the Springboks.
The Lions have now lost the 'advantageous' match.
The last match of any significance at Loftus was the Super 14 Final where the Blue Bulls annihilated the opposition.It is a matter for conjecture but I think the Blue Bulls would give the Lions an extremely tough match and seven are in the Boks Test squad.
The Lions management have now selected players to cover the supposed weak areas in the set pieces.
The Bok management will also have learnt a lot from last weeks Test and will be unlikely to leave their exposed areas uncovered.
By 5.00pm (local time )on Saturday I feel that the series will be won.
Beacon of hope or white elephant? 07:36am on 18 Jun 2009 I think you have to look at the bigger picture.
Firstly these stadiums,Gautrain,road upgrading contracts and the increased tourist services facilities in preparation for 2010 have provided jobs and income for thousands of people who were unskilled and now have skills to offer the job market.
The situation in PE is the same countrywide as you now have new stadiums
in Cpt,PE,Joburg,Nelspruit and Durban and don't forget the upgrading on the other existing stadiums.
Newlands will eventually go as it cannot expand and access is difficult.Western Province/Stormers will move to Green Point.
In time Ellis Park will go the same way.It is an old stadium and the Soccer City stadium will replace that.Orlando Pirates and/or Kaiser Chiefs will play there along with the Gauteng Lions.

I don't think Sharks will be in a hurry to leave the Absa stadium in Durban,but it might come in time.
Along with Rugby all the big football clubs in SA will move to the new Stadiums which will as you have mentioned assist Nelspruit and PE.
There will of course be other events held in the Stadiums.The climate in SA is very conducive to concerts,rallies sports days etc etc.
I am sure that the stadiums will be productively used in the future.
The south african motto is 'Maak a plan'.The IPL was started from scratch in 17 days!!!!!!!!
Buoyant Bowe lifts Lions 7:37pm on 14 Jun 2009 whilst you are all busy picking the Lions team remember the opposition.

Time to mention the unmentionable 11:08am on 16 Mar 2009 The 6n teams this year have all been much of a muchness.I think when it mattered Ireland did what they had to do,because the core of the team have been around together for quite a while.The Ireland/France game was the best to date.Last Sunday the "other French"team turned up against England until the last 20 minutes ,when the game was dead and buried.Italy gave Wales a big 'wakeup" call,whilst Scotland have huffed and puffed,but do not have the strength in depth to put out a winningside.
This tells us that next week's game will be close.If it was at Croke Park I would give Ireland a chance, but it isn't and that will be to Wales advantage.Prediction is Wales to win by no more than 6 points.
Even bigger problem is from the 4 teams,who do you pick for the Lions Tour of South Africa.There are one or two stand out players,Shane Williams,O'Driscoll and O'Donnell but after that McGeechan and co.have a problem with too many players of similar calibre.
