Reasons to be cheerful 1:36pm on 02 Dec 2009 Right, I've had enough - Let the Right One In came out on GENERAL wide release THIS year in the UK.
Stop using IMDb's dates or personal viewing as your guide, as Mark probably bases 'best films of the year' on UK release dates.

Reasons to be cheerful 6:06pm on 01 Dec 2009 I definately agree with you about Let the Right One In. It's just a shame Hollywood liked it so much they paid it their version of a compliment by ... remaking it. Why, why, why? Anyway, one I get a BD player, LTROI will be the first film I get for it.

As for my personal best actor this year, Sam Rockwell's subtle tour de force in Moon and Sharlto Copley's naturalistic anti-hero transformation in District 9.

Frank Dillane was very creepy in HP6, but the role's too small to be eligible. Shame, as a lot of good actors shine in small roles. This young man is a much more talented that Dan, Emma or Rupert IMO.
Me and Me and Orson Welles 12:51pm on 27 Nov 2009 Feel-good film of the year would probably be (500) Days of Summer, for me. Yes, Mark, I know it's too quirky and self-indulgent with itself for you, but I remember smiling mostly throughout and a happy feeling radiating from within. Quite charming, if it's like an indie teen's music collection being played throughout the film.

Up wasn't feel-good throughout(pretty darn tearjerking in places) but I felt happy after I saw it ... if that counts, you know, like the time spent has been worth it, the journey with Carl and the little boy.

As for mis-representing taglines, well any that made really godawful steaming rubbish like Transformers 2 look in any way good!
5 live review: New Moon 5:19pm on 23 Nov 2009 So, the Twilight Saga is a bit of a guilty pleasure of sorts for you then, Mark? Are you going to read the books? Please post a video when you do! :D
Screening Room: Animation & Aardman 5:46pm on 19 Nov 2009 Tweek - Perfect Blue is one heck of a psychological thriller! Parts of it were like Memento I thought. I was very freaked out in parts.

I'm currently watching Tokyo Godfathers.

Related to Japanese animation again, if you're a fellow fan I recommend those ones mentioned in my list of 'overlooked animated films' in my original post.

5 Centimeters Per Second is a combo of three romantic shorts with beautiful animation and compelling characters.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a funny Groundhog Day teen story that's funny and heartfelt.
Paprika is a confusing and imaginative sci-fi that needs repeated watches to comprehend it all.
Only Yesterday is a nostalgic look back on a woman's childhood.
Lupin(pronounced Rupan)III and the Castle of Cagliostro is a fun, witty and thrilling adventure.

I could go on :)
Screening Room: Animation & Aardman 4:47pm on 19 Nov 2009 Well, my best animated film according to my IMDb votes is a three way tie between: Toy Story and Toy Story 2 and Bambi.

Toy Story and it's sequel are just fun, witty and touching films and Bambi is my fave coming-of-age tale that's more than just cutesy animals(witness a scene where a bird slowly goes mad as a hunter lurks somewhere near or when the three pals are 'Twitterpated').

Ones that got 9s from me were WALL.E(intrigiung dystopian film) and Spirited Away(creative and bizarre).
Other non-feature films that also got 9 were: The Peter and the Wolf stop-mo is magic and the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon is hands down one of the best character driven story arc cartoons I've seen from this decade.

Worst:

A join tie for: Treasure Planet and Thumbelina(94). The former thought putting Treasure Island IN SPACE was a good idea, and the latter has a heroine that doesn't do much apart from whinge, has Latin stereotypes with the toads, Disney-rip off character design and songs and basically just misses the main point of Andersen's tale - that she learns to survive by herself in a world that is dangerous for the very tiny and is rewarded for her perserverance and kindness by having her happy ending.

Overlooked animated films that were very good: 5 Centimeters Per Second, Pom Poko, Grave of Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday, Paprika, Lupin III Castle of Caligostro, The Brave Little Toaster, Flight of Dragons, The Last Unicorn, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Plague Dogs, The Prince of Egypt, The Secret of NIMH, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Watership Down and When The Wind Blows.

Yes, I'm quite a fan of Japanese animation.

Call of Civic Duty 2 12:50pm on 17 Nov 2009 Usually, as a rule of thumb, most uproar about 'corruption of youth' through any media is absolute sensationalist tosh. Don't they get it than banning things(when it gets to that extent) only makes some of the general public want to see it more? 'The people should not be afraid of their government; their government should be afraid of its people'.

I've played games like Prince of Persia where I have to stab and slash enemies, yet weirdly I've never copied this action in real life ... hmm, maybe cause I know the difference between fantasy and reality like the vast majority of sensible and reasonable minded gamers out there. How would've thought it?

And I'm a fan of Brooker's too - Screenwipe needs to come back on BBC4 sooner rather than later.
The Best Christmas Movie Ever 1:55pm on 14 Nov 2009 I've just seen the much maligned Silent Night, Deadly Night and I thought it was entertaining - unintentionally hysterical from the wooden acting(the scene where he visits his grandpa) and OTT dated score and actually quite creepy at times.

One thing's for sure - I'll never see a man dressed up as Santa the same way again! Naughty!
