Time to hug a banker? 11:05am on 17 Mar 2009 'there's evidence that the financial services industry, whose excesses have caused (to a large extent) the first global recession for more than 60 years, will suffer less than businesses which make solid, real stuff for export.'

Only because the Government has determined as much - many banks would be and should be bankrupt without such taxpayer generosity.

The tone of your article once again suggests that the UK is 'good' at banking - that we have a large number of highly skilled operators. CLEARLY WE DON'T and the rest of us will be paying dearly for that misconception for some years to come.

I'm NOT sure the correct word for snatching back pensions is 'corrupt'.
Nor do I think this is simply the politic of 'envy'....How about JUSTICE.

Not only should he receive ZERO pension .....but he should pay back the last five years of bonuses.
Clawing back Sir Fred's pension 7:27pm on 03 Mar 2009 Many commentators are saying blah, blah, blah has to be done to save the banking system and get the economy working again....and then going on to say that now is not the time for finger pointing / apportioning blame etc....

Well when will that time be?!?.....and is the reason for the delay and the system is still in chaos because many of those responsible are still in their positions.

Bring on the lawyers ....and the prosecutions !!!

Other matters are somewhat more important - the level of Government involvement in saving the banks.....and more importantly what is actually being done to ensure credit is freed up and banks are functioning in a 'normal' way again.

Sir Fred is hardly alone in being grossly overpaid.

I think the whole pension level argument is just the start of it - he should have to pay back past years bonuses. That is he and quite a number of others.

Did you also notice in that book NOT a mention of Sir Fred Goodwin and scarcely a mention of RBS.

A book bizarrely titled 'WHO RUNS BRITAIN? ...and who's to blame for the economic mess we're in.

The book has very little to do with the title. RP shows himself to be a typical business reporter by giving several glowing reports on on the apparent skills and talents of various businessmen.

- would it not have /STILL BE been cheaper for the Government simply to have nationalized it and whiped out all the private shareholders.

- also just because all deposits are guaranteed up to ??? why don't the banks default on larger and especially larger foreign loans/ deposits ??? (hardly desirable but surely preferable to taxpayers footing the bill forever and a day.

- why does RP and others persistently perpetuate the myth that the senior management and directors of banks and city firms are so talented and deserve bonuses and huge rewards - clearly they are any but talented. It is difficult to know how they could have run their businesses any worse. Banking is NOT rocket science.
Fred Goodwin to receive £650,000 for life 05:38am on 27 Feb 2009 interesting reading....I just checked Robert Preston's book WHO RUNS BRITAIN?...and who's to blame for the economic mess we're in. Interesting indeed. The paperback edition published in September 2008 has not one mention of Sir Fred Goodwin.

Indeed it is a book with an odd title and having read it I have to say it is a very poor book with little to do with the actual title - most of it is what business journalist do it at least did do very well - hero worship various business leaders. About half the book seems to be taken up with Sir Philip Green and M & S.

But this is the Government we are talking about here - no ordinary shareholder.....can't they bring in and pass a special law - The Removal of Fred Goodwin's Pension Act of 2009 ???

IF NOT, WHY NOT ??

It would be one of the few popular things this Government has done of recent times if they were to do it.....i.e. it's a sure vote winner.
