Suggest a story 7:09pm on 17 Feb 2009 Asbestos in our schools and public buildings?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been running a national campaign highlighting the danger of "inadvertent exposure to asbestos". According to HSE publications (HSE OC 265/48) "Breathing in asbestos fibres can eventually lead to a number of diseases, including:
1. asbestosis or fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs,
2. lung cancer; and
3. mesothelioma, a cancr of the inner lining of the chest wall or abdominal cavity".
The HSE go on to inform us that it is not uncommon for people to be inadvertently exposed to asbestos fibres.
Following a request under the freedom of information act Manchester City Council divulged that the vast majority of school buildings (100 out of 112) in Manchester contain asbestos and of the 1,043 schools in Greater Manchester 903 have the cancer-causing materials present in their buildings. On he surface (sic) it would appear that children, staff and visitors who work or study in Manchester schools may be at risk.
