The Serious Coens 1:31pm on 24 Nov 2009 I think the most mainstream film that the Coens made that I have seen is "Fargo" which was 10+ years earlier than "No Country for Old Rope".
I didnt see Ladykillers but anything starring Tom Hanks that is a remake of a classic comedy is likely to be mainstream.

Serious Man reminds me of Barton Fink even the appearance of the main character is somewhat Finkish. It should come with a Jewish glossary for "goys".
5 live review: 2012 08:59am on 19 Nov 2009 Being Queen post apocalypse might be a bit dreary. Of the 800 or so billionaires in the world (rather less because my figures are dollars and the actual ticket price was 1 billion euros), there would only be about 25 subjects to wave to, all of whom would have considerably more money and presumably enjoy a higher status post apocalypse. It might be one of Tony Robinson's worst jobs in history.

If the Queen doesn't make it aboard, The Duke of Westminster would. His wife is distantly in line to the throne, so the monarchy survives. Hoorah! :-)

Returning to the subject, a film about a post-apocalyptic 2012 (sans CGI) starting where this pre-Thanksgiving turkey ended would have been much more interesting.
5 live review: 2012 9:53pm on 18 Nov 2009 er, no Silvio Berlusconi dies by choice just as Danny Glover did. No sign of the DoE or other HRH's ; we only see HMQ and the Corgis.

Actually, the Queen is only worth about $450 million according to Forbes magazine so she wouldn't be able to afford a place on the "Ark".

Silvio Berlusconi is worth about $9.4 billion so he would be able to afford several places, so maybe he gave a place to HMQ even after she told him to shush.

I think Mark Kermode is out in the weeds on this one. It's OK for him to take somebody else's word for whether or not some video game crosses the line of bad taste/likeliness to corrupt/likeliness to cause someone to commit violence, or whatever the hell it is supposed to be. But it sounds like Mark is now evangelizing this viewpoint to a wider audience.

At least the juries that voted to ban the video nasties had seen the films and even though they may have known little to nothing about the horror genre (and got the decision wrong), they were still in a better position to judge than someone who admits to know nothing about the subject AND hasn't seen or played the game in question.

You can't criticize a politician for making a pronouncement on a game which you presume (but don't know) he hasn't seen and at the same time
take the opposite view when you are starting with an equal or even greater level of ignorance, even on the say-so of one Charlton Brooker Esquire. I don't have a great regard for Keith Vaz but he may have consulted with other people before espousing his opinion, some of these people may be behavioural psychologists or other "experts"; I have no idea who he may have talked to. It's also possible that it is a knee-jerk reaction and he talked to nobody but there does seem to be hypocrisy here.

I have to agree with you about the length and the CGI and yes, what were all the skyscrapers doing up in the air? I think the plane even flew under an airborne subway train at one point. Boring.
Screening Room: Disaster! 11:51pm on 15 Nov 2009 I saw 2012 today and it was really quite bad (I havent seen Bride Wars but surely it wasn't worse than this).

Now, what did you mean by saying (twice) they didn't mention the Olympics? It was quite clearly mentioned that the Olympics were suspended, there was even "news" footage of British Bobbies standing around not doing very much to illustrate it. Explain yourself, sir!

The Mayan calender ends at December 21st(ish), so really there should be time to get the olympics in.

Screening Room: Disaster! 10:48pm on 12 Nov 2009 It's already been mentioned, but "Dr. Strangelove" is one of the best films, ever. So that's your thesis busted right there. :-)

It's also a film, armodilloslim, that arguably ends without any hope unless it's the hope of Peter Sellers relishing the 10-1 female to male ratio in an attempt to keep the species extant.

"On the Beach" although frankly a bummer in tone, was not "apocalyptically bad" and does end with absolutely no hope for anybody.

"28 Months Later" (another decent apocalyptic movie) also ends without hope unless it's hope of another sequel.

Arguably "Cloverfield" which apart from the first 30 minutes was a decent movie that ends abruptly and without much hope except with the knowledge that the video survived and is being viewed by somebody/something. But since Cloverfield 2 is in the works we'll have to assume something survived.

Even out of your own mouth, you declared that "Knowing" was not *that* bad.

Mark is wrong about many things (like all films should be made in the language where they take place with subtitles or that Marion Cotillard should have tried to sing in La Vie en Rose or that Twilight is a good film or that Inglourious Basterds was as bad as he said or that Star Trek was as good as he said or ....) but he's not wrong about 3-D.

We don't want it and we don't need it - certainly not in its current form.
The depth of field is not continuous and it really messes up the colours if you want to know what we lose, and who wants to wear stupid glasses to watch a film? If you make an animated kiddies film in 3-D only, yes people are going to see it (just like if you make an animated kiddies film in 2D only).
