When is all the dirty laundry to be exposed?

Can we really expect 'joe public' to swallow another £25 billion on top of previous similar sized bailouts, without knowing what it is propping up? What is it now? £6000 'per head' in total?

Lets see the details of what RBS (and Lloyds, HBOS and Barclays) investments and loans they messed up on!

MP's were exposed (their expense claims) and the point was made that nobody should be above the law.

So why should bankers and their institutions be above the law?

There has got to be a little bit more 'spine' and 'resolve' in both the Treasury, the regulators and the Bank of England or has HM Gov got something to hide?

OPEN THE BOOKS. Let's see the dirty laundry behind the accounts and the balance sheets and above all, let's see what is being KEPT OFF THE BALANCE SHEETS!

Any newspaper or media journalist brave enough?

My thanks for the correct reference inadvertently omitted.

You have me wrong. I am well aware of the probable consequences.

It was clear that if CO2 was accummulating (not being absorbed by well understood systems) this must have been due to some other mechanism that perhaps was not as widely understood or accepted, not just increasing emissions.

Its always been clear, to me at least, that any Ozone hole would allow increasing exposure to external (solar) radation and consequential temperature increases.

We know well that the Pacific and Southern Oceans have been extraordinarily warm for a long time. Some suggested that it was man made warming due ONLY to CO2.

At least we know that the warmer water is, it fails to absorb as much CO2 and eventually releases Co2 into the atmosphere.

Fix the Ozone layer first (it still doesn't get much press) and the consequential protection that affords the Southern Hemisphere will in time help in dealing with the fight against higher Co2 levels.

Trying to fix Co2 without addressing the Ozone layer is just plain foolish.
Raw emotion of dolphin kills 08:29am on 01 Jul 2009 Richard, I've been following your excellent pieces recently. Guess your having a 'whale' of a time (excuse the pun)? The relevance to this (bad joke) was, feedstocks in the Southern and Pacific Oceans are being depleted, whether through fishing or not.
I was wondering why the BBC Science page hasn't yet carried the PACIFIC RESEARCH published in New Scientist last week on the failure of the Oceans to absorb CO2, due to previously misunderstood consequences of the Ozone hole over the Antarctive and the now PROVEN consequential effects on the Ocean CO2 levels and the threat to marine life?
Fishing WHales and Dolphins to extinction, is not good.
Their total destruction due to damage to the Oceans, through CFC pollution is even more frightening, as it hasn't until now been understood.
We need the public, via the BBC, to hear about the potential devastation of marine life and the bigger impact on CO2 levels, directly due to CFC's effect to the Earth's Ozone layer, than any man-made CO2.
This is now out in the open, so marine scientists and climatoligists should be taking this far more seriously.

Journalists like yourself, are being led away from the REAL NEWS, that the Government has put not one penny of real money back into the REAL economy.

All the money has gone in guarantees and some support to the banks.

The rest, as so many unemployed are finding out too late, is just 'political posturing' and 'smoke and mirrors'.

The Government DO NOT HAVE ANY MONEY TO PUT INTO THE REAL ECONOMY. FULL STOP.

Its often hinted at that we need something like the French 'day's of action' to signal to the Government just how desperate it is out here in the Private Sector.

The public sector is totally protected and immune at present.

Just like the way the RPI was manipulated by removing elements such as House prices, thus distorting the true inflation figures, so the 'REAL COST TO THE ECONOMY IS BEING DISTORTED BY WITHOLDING POTENTIAL PUBLIC SECTOR UNEMPLOYMENT, THROUGH RECKLESS GOVERNMENT BORROWING TO KEEP JOBS OPEN AND TO INCREASE PUBLIC SECTOR EMPLOYMENT TO KEEP SOME PRIVATE SECTOR PEOPLE OFF THE UNEMPLOYMENT REGISTER.

Worse still, we have the age-discriminatory APPRENTICES Scheme that allows young potentially unemployable people to stay off of the Unemployment Register

And just as surely as Year End Accounting shows the 'black holes' in the Bank's books, there will come a time when the Gov has to reveal its enormous 'mother of all black holes' in its books.

We should all be WORRIED. VERY VERY WORRIED. UK PLC IS ABSOLUTELY BROKE.

Remember when we feared the growth of Japan and the 'Rising Sun' new economy?

A huge power shift from the days when the USA was in this position.

A growing nation with financial clout will use its assets to secure as much access to as many resources and other assets as it needs to sustain growth.

The fact that the rest of the world is suffering is irrelevant.

I wonder how this will affect the future price of these resources here in the West, given the Chinalco-Rio tie-up and the desire for the current Rio board to demand as high a price as possible?

If they set the price too high, we in the West will consume less, if too low then Chinese home market could suffer from surges in demand from the West and a subsequent price increase in their domestic market, making the cost of producing goods in China for export to rise, thus increasing the cost we will have to pay to import. A fine balancing act indeed.

Or should we bring some manufacturing capacity back 'in-house' and trade for needed resources?

If the announcement today is correct, that AD and GB are proposing a massive increase and investment in carbon-neutral industry employing an extra one and half million or so in the 'renewables sector', I guess manufacturing will stay in China.

I dread the day when UK plc is converted to a 'solar powered' green leisure park, filled with farms, birds, wooden-eco-arks and lots of people on state benefits!

Utopia, anyone?

More regulation of the Banking system will only mean banks employ more wily skilled lawyers and academics to 'worm' their way around the regulations and trade the way they can make a buck without regulation.

Human nature being what it is, man will always find a way to fiddle the system

It was after all the fiddles that brought the system crashing down, not just the label 'corporate debt' or 'devaluation of assets' or 'sub-prime'.

We need the Governments to stop protecting the fraudsters and punish them and let's start again, with a clean sheet.

Markets will only then regain the confidence needed to trade soundly.

According to Gillian Tett in the Ft this morning, it would appear that the 'toxic assets' or 'debts' announced by the banks might benefit from public auctions of the CDO ABS.

where were the Serious Fraud office and MI5, the Security Service in all this?

Forget terrorists and bombs in Downing Street, any single minded group of Financial market 'dark players', could easily destabilise any European Government, if they chose so to do, as we are now so very very exposed and in a word, bankrupt.

So why were the 'security services' not also monitoring what is undermining 'national economic security and stability'?

we do urgently need GB to take the short drive to the Palace, asap.

as for RBS being a dead horse, it would be the eco-friendly thing to do, to 'can' the 'dead horse', although do we have the demand for all that cat food?
