The real debate has scarcely begun 11:03am on 11 Nov 2009 Rather amusing to note Peter Mandelson's diatribe this morning about the horrible Sun newspaper and their support for the Conversative Party for the coming election. Guess it was OK with the Labour spin machine when they were supporting Blair and Brown in the previous elections from 1997 onwards. He even goes on to imply that the naughty Sun and Sky News force the BBC to follow suit and report Brown and Labour's failings. Is he saying that Labour has a pact with the BBC to avoid reporting some issues.
Nick what is your interpretation of Mandelson's statement ?

Got to ask the question, no personal offence intended, which eye was he using at the time ?

Regardless of the Sun's position, Brown messed up badly and then called the poor lady and tried to tell her that he was sorry she couldn't read his writing. Words fail me Nick on your interpretation at times.

Nick -- not to sure whether you have noticed but there a very large number of people "poorer" in the UK right now. This is predominantly due to the gross mismanagement of the UK economy by Brown while he was Chancellor. Our business [IT & Business Services] revenue is down 50 percent in 2009. The country has 2.5 million unemployed, Lloyds about to drop 5000 [who will be poorer] and so it goes on under Brown and Labour.
David Cameron is right that they will need a very different approach to turnaround the UK so Labour supporters and "Anti-Tory sceptics" need to get to grip with the fact that 2010 will see a new approach. We actually need an election NOW so that David Cameron can get on with the job. Yvette Cooper can cry "Thatcherism" as much as she likes but Labour have failed the the UK people in so many areas that they should be ashamed to even comment.

Miliband's future 'in UK politics' 08:15am on 10 Nov 2009 Nick -- really don't think this post deserves comment. Aren't there more pressing issues facing the country than discussing what the little boy Milliband may or may not do when Labour lose office ?

He is the son of the late Marxist theorist Ralph Miliband . . .who was forced to relocate from Belgium in 1940 as Hitler's army moved westwards through the country and he managed to catch a boat for London at Ostend. He and his father Samuel entered UK illegally on forged papers. Once in England he further changed his name to Ralph.

When politics matters... 2:17pm on 09 Nov 2009 Totally agree with all the comments above. Watching the service at the Cenotaph yesterday -- one had to question the nerve of Brown even participating. The nation is tired of his bumbling along, his constant attempts for PR and spin [for example the Berlin Wall speech today], and his "I know what is best for everyone" attitude.
Nick given your connections with No10 isn't it time you gave them a nudge and told them that the country wants an election -- NOW -- before Brown and his team make any further unpopular decisions.

The overall point I was trying to make is that there are a number of EU related questions that perhaps need to be "aired" or revisited. These could be as part of the Conservative Party lead up to an election since I do feel there a large number of very disgruntled citizens out there ticked off that, whether it be the original constitution or the so-called watered down version Lisbon Treaty, Brown and his team totally ignored giving the UK a referendum, unlike some of the more democratic members of the EU. I suspect we all know why they avoided giving the people a say.
The Tories' 'Europe' moment 1:55pm on 03 Nov 2009 Gavin -- why are you and Nick R. focussing on what David Cameron may decide to do once the Lisbon Treaty is signed off by the Czech President. Why aren't you challenging Brown on why he failed to deliver the promised referendum in the Labour manifesto. Labour have sold the UK down the river and it is high time that the greater press discussed that rather than what David C. may decide.
That aside my take is that yes the Conservatives should have some form of referendum -- asking the UK voters a number of questions - eg:
Join EURO - Yes/No
Reduce UK involvement in EU to just trade - Yes/No
Reduce UK funding of EU - Yes/No
Stay in the EU - Yes/No
With the Lisbon Treaty potentially in place, David C. will then need to ask the people what they would prefer going forward.
I don't envy the Conservatives, there is so much [Labour] legistlation that they will have to reverse to get the UK back being a decent country to live in.
So, the Czech was not in the post 10:45am on 03 Nov 2009 #1 -- absolutely.
My take is that David C. should consider a much broader referendum and ask the British people a number questions concerning UKs future with Europe. For example;
Euro - Yes/No
Reduce Contribution to Euro funding - Yes/No
Trade Agreement only - Yes/No
Withdraw Completely - Yes/No
Let's face it, it is Blair and Brown that failed the UK people with a referendum on the Constitution/Lisbon Treaty. Don't really feel that David Cameron should carry the can for Labour's incompetence and down right election bribes and lies.
