Well said! It is nice to read these ideas.

Anyhow, I come here just to express my feelings, and read opinions from other people. I never expect fighting with words can change anything, only honest hard working counts.

China is making her steady progress, and certainly this will go on. And, we will be part of this story.

Although these things are some of the most significant life elements among youth in Europe and America, they have never been widely appreciated in China even in young generation, due to cultural differences. The meaning of interviewing a chinese rock player for his political opinion is as marginal as interviewing a buddhist among an Anglo-American community for his idea about the financial crisis.

Second comment: Interview more normal people, not only dissents.

China has made its 'reform and opening' for more than 30 years. There are countless problems emerging, many of them are considered hopeless by the ourside world, yet we come through all of them. One important point of understanding a policy in China is to observe whether it can benefit the majority of people. If so, then it will work, if not, it will be abandomed.

Thus, for each and every event, if you only care about dissents, you can always find some, not strange at all. But if you only do this, you will learn nothing more than once again confirming 'China is evil'.

In reality, China is much more than that.
As if 1989 never happened 10:32am on 04 Jun 2009 One thing is quite clear: If the event would have ended in the way western world wishes, China is now another soviet union.

Now the majority of chinese people, including me, feel so lucky that this has not happen. The only thing BBC can do is to bombard its own website with nostalgic reports, for this failed color revolution.

It is good to be so.

When does old age begin? 2:53pm on 18 May 2009 For the first half of this article, I would say it is a good work of James. It shows some understanding of Chinese culture in depth with also a funny example, I have really enjoyed the story.

But again, the last few paragraphs ruined the nice piece. James, can you please stop trying to link everything happening in China to politics?

In the time of culture revolution in China, all reports about western world were ended with a remind to the reader, that a critical view over the facts should be maintained since it is from 'caplitalism' countries.

Now who is still in 'culture revolution'?

Very well said, I fully agree with you.

In the earthquake, the survivors have shown great courage, endurance and humanity, which deeply touched me. Through the event, I feel so proud that I come from the big family China! The government has done a good job, not only in the rescuing, but also in the reconstruction works till now. Of course the reason of house collapsing should be investigated, and the investigation is still going on, from which we will learn lessons for the future.

As usual, this report is again trying to pick bones out of an egg. Reading through all the topics of this blog, it is really hard to find any hint of something good happening in China, and none of you seems to have doubted on that. To be honest, if I was born and grow up in Europe, I dont think I may have any positive impression about China. Well, if people in UK are happy with it, then let it be but, every time when I see you naturally insist that you have independent media and free opinions and assume yourself holding more truth than others, I cant help feel ridiculous, and then write something again.
The right qualifications 1:23pm on 08 May 2009 It seems for maybe all developed countries that there is a clear-cut standard on this topic: China should accept the emission cap, because it is corrent. If China refuse, then she is wrong. ... well, you are talking about 'persuade people', but this does not looks like a 'persuasion' at all. In many Chinese forums, people angrily react to the request of 'emission cap' with another suggestion that the cap should be calculated by the consumption of end products, rather than the production process ... You may see, if we so easily set up own standards and demand others to comply, we will soon end up in a deadlock situation which can be good for no one.

Beside openning another finger-pointing war, let's try to think of something more pragmatic. How can we cooperate to achieve some mutual benefit even when we are not totally agree with each other. Politics is a process of compromise, right?

For example, I come from Shanghai, which belongs to south China both in cultural and geographical point of view. Because the climate is mild, traditionally the construction standards do not care about heat preserving. Nowadays, more and more families are using air conditioning devices, thus bringing shockingly high electricity consumption in summer, while a large fraction of energy is lost due to this reason. Therefore, new standards are generally coming into application, which put increasingly strict requests on heat preserving and enviroment-friendly construction materials. As for the immobile market, houses with these features are also becoming very welcomed since more people can afford that, and also have the willingness to do so. It simply means saving in the future and more healthy living for the family.

Especially, European environmental techniques and materials have found a huge demand in China's market. I am studying in Germany, I know that Germany has made a really good business in this area, and they also have very ambitious plan of environmental technique related export to China in the coming decade- tripple the volume is only a conservative estimation. Personally, I am very glad to see this happening, becasue it is a nice deal which brings great profit to both side -- you earn more money, we make our life better, while we both improved the enviroment protection from the global point of view.

Not only the construction, but also many old factories and industrial facilities in China need to be modernized. If you may have a chance to visit Shanghai Expo, please remeber this very site was a huge steel factory several years ago. My old home in Shanghai was just a street away from this pollution monster, who can easily dye almost half sky into a bronze color. Now it has been closed and torn down, its 20 thousand workers (including one of my cousin brother) have been reallcoted to other jobs. But as you know, China's demand on steel will surely increase, thus many new steel factories must be built and current ones extended. Selling modern techniques and equipment is a vast market for Europe. Even for your banks, investment in these projects, in which emission reduction can also be achieved, is far more promising than buying bonds from wall-street.

So if I was the UK minister who is responsible for 'persuading', I will try to persuade people in UK to look more into the good business that Germany has made in the area of environment economy, seeking for chances to make real cooperation with China, rather than wasting time to talk about caps. You may not like what China is now, but you like making money and having good environment. From our side, it is exactly the same.

I see so many patriotic, single-sided, and government-supporting comments here, so I am curious. I see the 'Westerners' criticize their own countries much more often than... Chinese. I see some US citizens feel shame about their countries on some diplomatic policies, criticize their government's unpopular policies. But I see all Chinese proud of China's power, wealth, influence, and hate 'Western' countries' 'invasion by any means'.
I think we can see the difference, aren't we?

Of course we can see the difference, which is when we chinese discuss the issue your have mensioned, we write it in Chinese and put it into Chinese web sites. You can not expect we discuss our internal affairs in English, can you?

When discussions come to topics like how to manage our country, the depth, extent and critical manners of the articles in blogs of our web sites, no matter state-run or commercial ones, are no less or even more vigorous than what you have just mensioned, which even suprises me sometimes. Have you read them?

So this is really the interesting point why most chinese act so similarly here in BBC. My answer is: The whole altitude of you toward China made this to happen. The west world know little about China (as shown in the description above), but always assume yourself to be correct and tend to instruct us what to do (e.g. 'free Tibet'), or doing something that harms us to make yourself feel satisfied (like what Mr. Sarkozy have doen). To be honest, I am so confused about this self-supermacy altitude in the first year of my living in Europe. Later on, I get used to it - what else can I do?

The direct conscequence is: Most chinese, no matter he/she likes the current goverment of China or not, have already had enough with all your acts. Then, they come to defend China, their own land, as a cultural, historical and geographical entity. That is what you see and what you feel 'curious'. To some extent, the west world have made a great job: helping chinese people to unite together again, which in fact can't be easily achieved by Chinese goverment itself.

Thanks for your concern about China.

People in west tends to believe that their multi-party system can help to avoid social catastrophes, at least more easily to corrent them if it happened. You have mensioned the reasons, which are written in the textbooks on the history of democracy. But, a perfect description is not the necessary condition of a good result.

As examples, your democracy has not stopped or even cultivated the following events:

1. The first opium war against China Empire in 1840, in which HongKong was seceded to UK as one of the direct consequence.

2. The second optium war which, beside all catastrophes, destoried the royal summer palace in Beijing, and the loot have led to the recent report of James in his article 'Losing their heads'.

3. The Iraq war, which has not yet come to an end, and no one knows how it can come to an end.

Another example, I got to know a very nice Indian in University, of course he is confident on India's democracy system. But he frankly told me about his worry in some regions of India. There are local extrem Hinduism leaders, who are against almost all other religions and social groups, aiming at an exclusive Hinduism rule over the region, thus results in frequent riots and blocking of most social courses in local parliaments. According to his opinion, these people should really be 'banished from politics' for everyone's goodness, but due to the support of large grass-root Hindu groups, they always have their seats. This problem is nothing new. It has existed for decades, and still haunting over any development efforts of these regions.

In summary, I agree with the point of #21 tclim38: 'one party can be very efficient, if they do it right (like the past 30 years reform). Of course, it could be a disaster, if not done right, (like 'cultural revolution'). Then again, multi-party system is no different.'

Still I do not know which 'research' or 'database' you are referring, but whatever it might be, I know it is ridiculous and pointless, according to the experience of myself, that i have posted.

Of cource it comes with the question, which side you tend to believe. I am nobody important so you may choose to follow your source of information. I am fine with that, it is eventually your own decision.

But beside simply picking one, there is more you can do if you wish to know the truth.

I am sorry to repeat the boring process again: 30 million counts for 1 death out of 25 chinese during the time you mentioned. This would effectively trigger a deep sorrow from almost every chinese family (you know we have large network of family relatives) if it was true.

Nowadays there are many chinese studying, working and living in Europe. If you wish, you can ask any chinese from mainland China (not people from Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan since they have no such experience), with some politeness, about this very question:
Do you concretely know anyone who 'died 'prematurely' or 'excessively' due to famine around 1958 to 1961 in China' ?

It won't take a long time to reach your own evaluation.
