So basically, no single license-fee payer (terminology that seems to escape these bloggers), living and working in the UK, can actually appreciate this service legally!

Microprocessors, on the other hand, are ugly and boring. They're for those funny engineers to fiddle about with. Not good old tech journalists.

You're very right, ARM has done some excellent work. The companies that Rory mentions are not only paling in insignificance, they wouldn't have caught anyone's attention without incessant glamour and artsy Web 2.0 apps.

But then, that's what Silicon Valley is nowadays. A bunch of VC-loaded Facebook-Twitter addicts all vying for supremacy and user adoption.

Also, never make a mistake around a Linux user. Linux users love correcting people's mistakes.

I think you'll find that in the BBC Tech section, dot.life, there has certainly never been a set of comments exceeding 358, as it stands now. For a novelty operating system, there must be something on that.

Never irk a Linux user. Never underestimate his zealotry, the absolute lack of user empathy or customer understanding he and his beloved kernel inspires. And I say this as a user of Arch Linux myself.

Let this article of yours be a lesson to you, Rory - never write about Linux again. You might just break your servers through epic Slashdotting.
What makes a tech story? 8:45pm on 01 Sep 2009 You know, I am not at all opposed to more coverage on social networking, even Twitter. But Twitter must be portrayed as part of a bigger picture, not as the be all and end all. Your past articles and stories appeared to hail Twitter as the main force behind social interaction in the Web, attributing it to the fall in popularity of movies, or a force within German political influence.

My best advice to you, Rory, is to tread very carefully when it comes to the journalistic exposure of one product, or one commercial service. Treat technology as a holistic force of different products, vowing for supremacy and public adoption.

You make your life as eventful, or uneventful, as you can. A nation won't do that for you. Although, as an ex-pat Brit, I am sure you grew up with the insidious mentality that the State caters for your every whim. One sympathises, if so.

To blame your boredom on regional disparity suggests just that - a disparity. You're different to Australians, you can't relate to them. You suggest their live is suburban, casual, uneventful. Is British life, as a whole, any different? Not in the slightest. Your sedentary, suburban mentality clashes with the Australian mentality - you don't like this. Instead of challenging Australian norms, attempting to stimulate the people around you, you sigh and sulk.

Note all the points I have made, and denounce them all at your heart's content. But to insinuate that life in the UK is like being 'at the front of a big concert' is absolutely laughable. Really, I laughed.
After the Ashes 7:32pm on 29 Aug 2009 Thus far, campantman, I have believed your claims that you do not hate Australia. But after your last 3 comments, I must now stand in disbelief. In both senses of the word.

How you can tolerate a country you condemn as 'dispiriting', I fail to see. I see little wrong with hating a nation, even one that I myself have a good impression of. But resenting a nation while remaining there? You remind me of those radical Islamic clerics in the UK, who sit back, in full contempt of the nation they owe their lives to, sheltered away from the persecution they faced in their home land. They loathe the UK, good for them - but they should, they must get out.

I must assume you live in Australia out of personal choice. If its culture and its spirit is so unpalatable, then leave. Simple as that. Perch yourself in Mother England and condemn those sunburnt Ocker's until you're blue, red and white in the face.

As for British 'cultural' recession, it is plain to see that British culture has declined quite substantially in recent years. As have most nations in the West. If you feel that drunkenness, slobbishness and a curious obsession with sport is an Australian problem, you really don't know anything about Britain.

Well, I'm a student of Computing Science in Glasgow, that much I can tell you. It is only fair, after all - we know your name, what you look like, your occupation, and could probably locate you, given your earlier blog input on the location of your house via Street View!

As you can probably tell by the nature of my comments, I believe in a community-, and not a commercially-driven Internet, and I believe that is the only way, the best way to remain anonymous. I would be infinitely more supportive of Twitter if it were managed by a community receiving input through charity, like Wikipedia.

A community need have little interest in who you are or where you come from, as it only requires your input and the investment of your time.

A corporation, however much it may invest in a community, has profitability to champion above all else, and if it is profitable to reap personal identification details, store them, sell them off, or allow governments access to them, then they shall do so.

You would say 'What were the sheep told', not 'What was the sheep told'. Likewise, you would use the former with 'staff'.

That grammatical hiccup is perhaps the most interesting facet of this story. Spinvox, like many hopeful IT upstarts, intended to 'monetise' an idea, before an actual implementation. It failed. They saught human capital as opposed to technological capital, which could be considered foul play where privacy is concerned. They were caught. That's it. It's an interesting story, but it doesn't require that many blogs.
