Jury service, your verdict. 12:21pm on 24 Feb 2009 I sat on a jury at the Old Bailey some 20 years. It was both interesting and insightful.

But afterwards I changed my mind as I spoke with my brother who is a barrister.

The appallingly low regard the legal profession hold for jurors coupled with the tricks they use to win their case makes me wonder why we (the jury) took it all so seriously. I'd also say that the jargon and ritual used within the court room distance the jury so dramatically that far from doing a 'good' job, we're doing what we're (implicitely) instructed to do, and no more.

I'd like to see a reasoned debate and examine how other non-jury based countries do it.
What does a shoplifter look like? 12:01pm on 06 Feb 2009 Has your initial correspondant ever asked why he keeps getting 'fingered'? Because if it's in more than one shop, the only common factor in the equation is him.

We're led to believe that Thatchers comments were received badly by the rest of peoplein the room and a subsequent complaint was made. This seems wholly justified to me and not a simple knee jerk reaction.

I can sympathize with jasimmonds view, questioning whether Thatcher was approached to offer an apology, but that's not always so easy. Maybe the occasion wasn't right (weren't they waiting in a green room to go on air?), or she disappeared too quickly before people had time to reflect then react. In short, we all try make the effort to avoid offensive language - she should try doubly so given her position.

Cash Machines and the Partially Sighted 12:12pm on 28 Jan 2009 I have partial sight problems, though nowhere near as severe as some of the correspondants here. With me it's a question of contrast and it can be very difficult to make out screens of all types in daylight (sunny or not). This includes ATMs. PIN machines (indoors with bright store lighting), mobile phone displays, digital cameras, PDAs and other devices. I suspect there's no easy answer for some of theses devices. However, there's one that would be so easy to fix - the background coliur of a web page. If I could change to white typeface on a black background (rather than the default black on white), that would be an enormous help. A lot of websites now allow you to increase the font size - why not this very simple change too?
