Another quiet spell with the laptop and you 03:59am on 07 Mar 2009 Mark,you are in fact a genius filmcritic. I would agree with many people here. BUT you have beeen spectacularly wrong on many issues. One of your worst offences is your love for the saccarine and horrendous "Mary Poppins". Ok, I will calm down and get it out. The feminist undertone ia the ONLY thing good about this movie. I'm from Denmark, but I read the Mary Poppins books as a child and they were magical. Mary poppins was not a perky, intolerably cheerful twit , she was generally unlikeable, but magical in an eerie way. When I saw the movie I was "ever so disappointed" It was awful. Julie Andrews was awful, the children were awful, and Dick van Dyke was worse than Nick Nolte in "Lorenzo's oil". Basically they took a lovely and magical story and violated it to its very core If you want a perfect children's movie see "My neighbor Totoro". Mary Poppins is utter bilge.
The Culture Show: Take on Mark with the Anti-Kermode 09:35am on 17 Feb 2009 Tom Cruise as Stauffenberg. Why on earth cast him as a German?
Let\s start at the awful German he tried to get away with at the beginning at the movie. Why would Stauffenberg speak German with a horrendous american accent? Also don\t cast Cruise with people who are actual actors. All of the people in it managed to give convincing performances and they pulled you in to the reality of the film. Then comes Stauffenberg, played like a flawless actionhero by a guy with the most disruptive accent in the history of cinema and drags you away from Valkyrie and leaves you with Top Gun set in Germany
5 Live: Kermode and Mayo's Weekly Film Review 07:49am on 27 Jan 2009 When I saw the Benjamin Button trailer, there was this clock. They zoomed and zoomed in on it and from the first zoom you knew it was going o go backwards. I had a Kermode moment where I just though "What a load of pretentious rubbish"
5 Live: Kermode and Mayo's Weekly Film Review 07:11am on 27 Jan 2009 I liked the piano... Lovely music. And lovely men. Maybe I was too caught up in naked man-buns to realize it was boring. I loved it though. It was one of those films you eat while watching, if that makes sense.
