Is Italy better than Britain? 07:26am on 15 Jul 2009 An article on tourism from 8 years ago? Surely my 11.50 a month could have contributed to someone coming up with a more recent list? You forgot to mention that Italy only became world champions by piling insults on one of the sport's greatest ever players.

Then we only have to look at China topping the Olympic medals table to see how an oppressive dictatorship without freedom of speech fits your model 'nicely'. Thanks for the tips but we'll (meaning Britain) keep on giving the world some of it's finest actors, musicians, writers and artists while we'll leave you to carry on contributing...errrr...errrr...Harold Bishop and Shane Warne.
The Pom influence 2:58pm on 27 Jun 2009 Any influence will naturally diminish as Britain moves towards full European integration, a decision which effectively meant turning it's back on the old colonies.

Despite short-sighted opposition, EU integration will allow the UK to be part of a world superpower to rival the US, Russia, India and China and ultimately compete for the world's dwindling resources, which will determine success over the next few hundred years. Quite how Australia will fit into this multipolar order, I do not know, although given that most of its resources now end up in China, I could have a guess. People like wjbut may then just long for the good 'ole' days when they had freedom of speech, democractic elections - and a cricket team that used to thrash the 'pale stunted inhabitants'.

One Child Policy? The only people adhering to the 'One Child Policy' are a few government employees in the urban areas. The rest of the country carry on having more than one child so it's hardly an exclusive right reserved for ethnic minorities.

Tough words on human rights 6:06pm on 27 Feb 2009 Fair enough. Both countries have their faults and hopefully these reports will ensure they recognise these.

If China and it's people think they are going to assume the sole position of world Superpower though, they need to think twice. The world is moving away from hegemony.

Instead we'll hopefully see a more multilateral structure based on respect and equality. The EU, Russia, North America, The Middle East, Brazil, India, and China will all have a significant and responsibile part to play in this new order.

Yes certainly, but since CCP is only communist by name, I can't see how this holds any relevance.
Hillary Clinton's visit to Beijing 08:33am on 21 Feb 2009 I couldn't agree more that it's a basic human right to keep ones limbs, eyes and ears which is why China's record on mining, factory and building site accidents is a national disgrace.

The roads in China are a death trap too but it's very hard to get statistics from the government on this score, so I can only go by the numerous Chinese people I've met who've been injured in car accidents.

If you want to see how well China is doing on the loss of property then go and watch 'Still Life' (Sanxia haoren) where millions have lost their homes with little compensation.
Choosing the next leader 10:20am on 18 Feb 2009 China's next top two: Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang both have strong economic backgrounds and interestingly are the offspring of communist officials (at one point this would have actually put them at a disadvantage). Xi Jinping dealt with Taiwan successfully when governing Fujian, which is probably no coincidence in the interests of further integration.
