Still searching for answers 10:25am on 30 May 2009 The truth about 'shoddy school buildings' will never be known either inside or outside China, unless some of those who built the schools come foward and admit that the schools they built wre sub-standard, or a local government official to come forward and admit that of the thousand of Yuan paid to build a new shool he/she pocketed a percentage of the costs which meant the proper materials could not be provided as there was not enough money left to purchase them - and it would take someone immensley brave (or foolish to say so). Bribery and corruption is a way of life in China, everybidy does it and everybody know about it - for instance if you want promotion or a good job in China its not based on 'what you know' but on 'who you know', if you can 'give presents' to the right people, or you know the right people the you get the promotion and/or a good job, if you know nobody then you have no chance.
Facing swine flu scrutiny 09:53am on 30 May 2009 Since SARS started inside China, and the H1N1 influenza virus started outside China, I am not surprised at the difference in response to the two diseases! I doubt if these measures alone will be enough to prevent the spread of the virus inside China, after all they are only looking for people who may currently have the symptoms of the disease.

Still searching for answers 2:18pm on 12 May 2009 The Chinese reponse to the earthquake was only due to the fact that the Beijing olympics were scheduled to happen in August 2008. If there had been no Olympics in Beijing then there would have been no response, or at least not in the same way as actually happened!

Pomp... and ceremony 4:57pm on 07 Mar 2009 I couldn't agree less. Chinese politics is riddled and crippled by corruption right down from those in Zhongnanhai to the smallest village, on a scale which makes British politicians looks like Saints.

Aren't all politicians corrupt, after all 'Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely'. As far as I can see any politician British, Chinese or otherwise is only after one thing, to see how much money he/she can make from his/her country.
QE Day (2) 5:16pm on 05 Mar 2009 Its all very well the BoE reducing the interest rates to 0.5%, who does that benefit? Nobody!

The BoE reduces the interest rates, the banks then immediately reduce the interest rates for savers, so nobody wants to save money in the banks as they are only going to get peanuts.

At the same time the banks and mortgage lenders don't reduce their interest rates for borrowers, they will only do so when pressure is applied from the government to pass on the rate reduction, they will do so grudgingly and will probbaly not pass on the full reduction of 0.5%, we shall be lucky if we see a reducion of 0.25%. In fact although the interest rate has been reduced by nearly 5% in the past year I hav eyet to see a change in my mortgage repayments to reflect this change in interest!
Pomp... and ceremony 5:03pm on 05 Mar 2009 A bit like the UK Government under Blair and Brown then. No real decisions made by parliament, all decisions made by a small minority of the political elite! Who elected the PM (not me I didn't vote for Gordon), he was chosen by his party - sound familiar - who elecetd Wen Jiabao, he was chosen by his party. At least in China they don't pretend to have democracy as everyone knows there isn't any. The current Government has more in common with the Chinese Communist Party than they realise! About the only difference between the current UK politics and the current Chinese politiocs is the name they use!!!!
China: All about jobs 09:34am on 04 Mar 2009 I see elsewhere in the news that China is to increase spending on its military, is this preparation for:
(a) stamping down on militant action within china i.e. another T'ianamen massacre
(b) preparation for a bit of empire building. after all they have one of the largest standing armies in the world so who could stop them
(c) preparation for both (a) and (b)

We shall just have to wait and see.
