A good read is Martin Barker's Haunt of Fears: The Strange History of the British Horror Comics Campaign', about the backlash against horror comics in the '50's - a time long before Spandau Ballet.

Cost report 6:52pm on 18 Sep 2009 Just a quick question for Dr Mark, which may actually be against the very spirit of this particular blog.

You've mentioned a low budget film you love (The Evil Dead) and one you dislike (31 North 62 East). You've also mentioned a big budget film you hate (Titanic).

You may already have spotted where this is going - you've missed one from your list.

Which is your favourite big budget blockbuster? Perhaps you've never said of a film that you enjoyed it for being value for money, but when was the last time you watched a film after hearing it cost a ridiculously astronomical amount and thought nonetheless that it was money well spent?

Most critics would argue that New Hollywood or The Hollywood Renaissance did not start with Easy Riders in 1968 - which would have been difficult as it wasnt released until 1969 - but with Bonnie & Clyde and The Graduate (and possibly Cool Hand Luke) in 1967.

You mean what is his 'least bad' film?

For me that's probably The Island. Lots of nonsense, running about, explosions, and product placement in a place where people can't buy the products, admittedly. But as the good Dr would perhaps note, at least it was about something, even if it ultimately doesn't have too much to say about it.

There's a far better and more serious film to be made about the subject - and better films on similar themes have been made previously - but by MB's standards at least it takes a look at the topic.

Blog reply replies: A matter of opinions 5:12pm on 07 Jul 2009 Mark, may I ask a quick question on your favourite subject - The Exorcist.

It has recently been announced that the film will get its first Blu-ray Disc release later this year, and that the version on the disc will be the new 'Version You've never Seen' (perhaps that should be changed to 'The Version You Never Saw Until the DVD Came Out)'.

It's currently unclear as to whether the original theatrical version will also be on the disc.

I've read your BFI Modern Classics book which discusses the revisions in depth but, as far as I can find, you never actually say which version you prefer.

So, which do you prefer? And should the other one be burned, or are they both equally valid for you?

For me, that's the level of rhetoric I'd rather leave to the tabloids.

One driver pulls in front of another without indicating and we have a road rage incident - does that mean changing lanes without indicating is 'morally poisonous'? Of course not. We just accept that it might sometimes happen, and in extremely rare instances it might have some sort of impact with a close-to-the-edge driver who has a screw loose.

As might the Nolan Sisters, if they're the next song on the radio.

So are the Nolans 'morally poisonous'? Actually, don't answer that.

But I hope that you take the point. Using extreme language to over-simplify the case doesn't get us anywhere.

As a society we legislate sensibly against things that pose a real danger; not against something which might bizarrely have an unforeseeable negative impact.

We win the argument over The Daily Mail by being logical and rational - not by reducing our level of discourse to their gutter level.
