The reason I said it would be shame to haev a WC without Argentina is because this is the showcase tournament in World football and any fan wants the great players and teams at the tournament. I fully agree that the qualifying process eliminates the teams not good enough, however even the most anti-Argentinian cannot deny that individually they have a squad of players that SHOULD be at a World Cup. The problem is the manager,who clearly does not know what he is doing. Any decent international manager would have got the Argentinian squad through the qualification based on the talent available.

Maradona has fallen out with too many key players (Riquelme, Zanetti, Cambiasso) and seems intent on picking players no where near good enough for international football (Palemro, Schiavi) and then changes the starting XI every game. It's no wonder they are struggling.

Everyone wants a strong World Cup, it raises the quality, and Argentina have talent capable of winning the tournemant. With respect, have Equador or Uruguay?

The AFA have to sack Maradona even if they qualify or it will be a disaster in South Africa.

I'm a bit dissapointed that you chose the email you did for this week. I understand you are making the point that South Americans dream of playing for thier country over club football, but what a stupid email. Firstly the guy quotes Steven Ireland, clearly one of the most clueless idiots in football (the cars, the lies etc etc) and then he agrees with him.

I love the World Cup, the passion and drama could never be replaced by club sides. If people like the emailer and Steven Ireland want the 'chore' of internationals to end, fine, leave them to their opinions but don't waste time of this excellent blog.

On to Argentina, it would be a disaster if they don't qualify, the World Cup is so much better when the best teams and players are there, and despite current results, as a bunch of players, Argentina are clearly one of the best teams. However Maradona is not a manager/coach and this is what is holding them back. I genuinly fear that they may lose and not even get a play off.

If they did qualify, would the AFA consider replacing Maradona for the tournament or would they stick with him? My view would be they would be lucky to get there and if they have any realistic hope of competing they should accept Maradona hasn't worked and look to get in a real manager. You can't argue that Maradona has blended a squad as it's different names every game.
Why Ronaldo is leaving Manchester for Madrid 8:47pm on 11 Jun 2009 #31 I was trying to have a reasoned debate about Ronaldo leaving but this post just baffles me. Whether you are a Liverpool fan, United fan or any other fan, there is no disputing that United have other great players such as (as you asked me to name them) Rooney, Berbatov, Vidic, Ferdinand, Carrick, Hargreaves etc etc. Of course they are not in Ronaldo's class, but as a team they are very effective. Obvioulsy as a Liverpool fan you will disagree and now spout about why they are all rubbish players, but I wouldn't want Reira or Pennant in my squad so we'll agree to disagree.

Of course United will buy new players, pretty much like Liverpool have been, with the amount of money available and the gap in the squad they will have to. However, you're clearly enjoying your 5 minutes of United knocking, like I said, come back in May and we'll discuss the merits of this transfer then.

But, he did not want to be there any more. £80m for an unhappy player in todays market is an excellent deal. Anyone who knows anything about team sports knows an unhappy player will cause unrest and de-stabalise the group. Even then best player in the world is not bigger than the team and the club.

United have plenty of other great players and they will buy new ones. So they may pay a little more, what's new, United, Chelsea, Madrid, all have to pay over the odds anyhow.

To suggest Ferguson is past is is laughable, you accused me of not knowing anything about football, but to jettison a manager who can build world class team after world class team, I'm embarrassed for you even suggesting it.

Why Ronaldo is leaving Manchester for Madrid 6:38pm on 11 Jun 2009 #9 - To say that La Liga is of no interest before Kaka and Ronaldo signed is a bit short sighted. La Liga has been a thriving and exciting league for years. There are clubs with great tradition and some of the world and Europe's top players play there week in week out such as Aguero and Forlan at Atletico Madrid and Villa and Silva at Valencia to name a few out of the usual Barca/Real circle.

With the likes of Villareal and Sevilla along with the other usual suspects, La Liga is a great competition. Ronaldo and Kaka will entice new viewers to this league, but I still think the Premiership will be the top drawer league in Europe. Ronaldo is one player, there are plenty of world class players in the Premiership.

#16 I'm not sure I can agree that Ronaldo has been let go as he is a 'liability'. A lot of the top world class players had this 'mad' streak, Best, Maradona, Cantona, but I doubt very much he was let go as he could get sent off. Keane wasn't sold was he? I think Fergie doesn't want a wantaway player and has managed to get a fantastic amount of money for one player. It makes business sense and he will keep harmony in the team, which has always been a large part of Man Utd's success.
Onside for England 2018 8:03pm on 20 May 2009 I don't really think it matters if we did or did not create the game, the fact is we are a huge football loving nation, with some of, if not the best stadia and infrastructure in the world. I have no objection with the World Cup going to developing football countries, such as the USA or even the Middle East, but I think after such a long time and after superbly organised and well run Euro 96, England is due a World Cup.

I would feel very very angry if the USA got the World Cup ahead of England. The Russians have a fair argument, a large football loving nation, however I imagine their are a number of issues with the huge distances between cities and the difficulties in getting in and moving around the country.

It is very frustrating that the decision is more a political argument rather than a football argument, this is where England are in danger. It matters not to me that we used the 'footballs coming home' slogan, yet this being seen as arrogant could be used as another excuse to deny England the chance to host a tournament that, in my opinion, we now deserve.

I'm 32 now and would love to see a world cup in my home nation before I am 50. If we fail in 2018 and 2022, that looks an unlikely prospect.
Low-key start to Brazilian championship 10:19am on 11 May 2009 To be fair, I don't doubt that some people heard of Adriano through Pro Evo, but to suggest we only think he is a good player because of that is a little insulting to a lot of people here who have a genuine interest in South American players.

My interest came from his explosive performances for Inter in 04/05, which I watched on the Champions League. He was outstanding that season, Pro Evo had nothing to do with it.
Low-key start to Brazilian championship 09:32am on 11 May 2009 Tim, from reading regularly it is apparent you are clearly very passionate about the Brazilan State Championships affecting the standard and quality of the main competitions.

I have to agree with you, it seems a mess of a system, saturating fans with meaningless games that dampen the enthusiasm for the real championship.

However I am very interested in the return of what were some of the big names from Europe to this seasons Championship. Ronaldo seemed an obvious one, serious injuries had left him almost untouchable for the major European clubs and a return to Brazil seemed the ideal place for him to rebuild his career, albeit in the latter stages.

Fred and Adriano interest me more, 2 players more in their prime rather than decline, in football terms. However, both seem to have struggled with the mental aspects of European football. Adriano in particular has had a troubled 3 or 4 years, and clearly his issues have affected him physically as he now looks heavy and a shadow of the player I watched in awe starring for Inter in the Champions League in 2004.

I was more surprised at Fred going to Brazil, he seemed to have a good reputation in France with an impressive list of admirers. How will the return to Brazil affect the chances of international recognition? Is the move viewed as a step down in the national managers eyes as the Brazlian league isn't as strong as the top European leagues, or is it of benefit to the players being at home, becoming easier to watch regularly along with the media support if they are performing well.

To finish off, do you think Adriano can come back to the level he was at around 2004/05, or has he lost his desire?
