McLeish's Birmingham defy odds 12:55pm on 16 Dec 2009 Nice blog Phil - I think Birmingham look a good team this season but could do with more firepower up front. Someone like Santa Cruz would be ideal for them (what a wonderful signing for City / move for Santa Cruz that has proved to be!).

ALSO CAN PEOPLE PLEASE STOP WHINGING AT PHIL WHATEVER HE WRITES??! It's getting boring. When he writes about the top four he gets accused of 'being predictable' and now he writes about Birmingham he gets accused of 'being predictable' too (23. aka TommySmith). Surely Phil's aim is to provoke debate? If you don't like it, don't read it again (or bore us all with your complaining).

Alternatively, you could go to the kindergarten version of these blogs instead - 606 debate (I've never seen so many smileys in my life). I was particularly amused with its link on United's match report last night:

I agree that whenever a penalty is taken, there are two outcomes - it goes in or it stays out - but that doesn't mean that odds of a penalty being scored is 50%.

Similarly, when I buy a lottery ticket although there are two outcomes - I win or I don't - it doesn't mean that my odds of winning are 2/1 (I think the actual odds are about 10 million to one). If you really believe that the odds of winning the lottery (or Zamora scoring a hat-trick in the world cup final) is 2/1 then I suggest you rush down to the post office / bookies!

According to your 'it either happens or it doesn't' theory, my chances of winning the lottery is 50% right?

Which means that my odds of winning the lottery AND marrying Keira Knightly is 50% too?? (the odds don't change, despite the fact that in all likelihood, despite my best efforts, I probably won't marry Keira Knightly).

So the odds for me to win the lottery, marry Keira Knightly, England win the World Cup with a Zamora hat-trick and for a UFO piloted by Elvis Presley to land in the centre-circle at half-time is 50% as well??

I don't think you'd have many customers if you were a bookmaker!

Which begs the question, who is the best penalty taker ever?

As a United fan, I'd like to suggest two. Firstly Cantona, who could obviously mind-read given the fact that the keeper would dive the opposite way. Secondly, Jesper Olsen, remember him? He'd always stroke the ball perfectly in to the bottom corner, so even if the keeper did guess correctly, he'd still be grasping air. As for non-United players, you can't really look beyond Le Tissier.

The photo on the link you provided was actually after D'Urso had awarded a late penalty for Middlesborough, not after the award for a throw-in. I'll assume you were joking! It amuses me that that photo is always cited as evidence of United's unruliness, contesting decisions. You'll never see Hughes rant at an official, or Craig Bellamy, oh no.

I'm a Manchester United fan and I LOVE the fact that the manager of my team is a sore loser!

Why shouldn't he criticise poor decisions - he does exactly what we as fans are doing in the stands. I don't want my team managed by a smiling politician, speaking like every word is scripted by his PR officer, I want to see passion.

Incidentally, one of the huge ironies of these kind of debates is that almost without exception, everyone who has commented about Wenger or Hughes (or Fergie, O'Neill etc) being a sore loser is probably a fan of a team whose manager has had a good old whinge recently when they've lost. These kind of blogs only prove how hypocritical we as fans are.

I disagree that they were 'facts'. They were opinions. He said Ferguson is the only manager above reprimand from the FA, which was a strange accusation considering Ferguson was the only manager up to that point in the season who had been issued with a touchline ban. He also said something about favourtable red cards at Old Trafford, despite the fact Old Trafford had only seen one up to that point that season (and even that was Lee Cattermole's wreckless challenge on Possebon in the Carling Cup). Liverpool had had something like five in their favour (three of which I think were later rescinded).

Anyway, that was talked about at length at the time on these messageboards, but the point is that Rafa's rant, no matter how much you agree or disagree with its contents, were not the actions of a classy, dignified manager.

You're joking with the Rafa suggestion I assume?

Yes, now Liverpool are struggling he acts with class and dignity but when they were doing well last season, he began beating his chest like an alpha male ape and criticised anyone and everyone. His A4 sheet escapade wasn't 'classy', his inaccurate 'facts' weren't classy, his dismissal of Everton as a small club wasn't classy and that petulant press conference in which he continually repeated the phrase "I am focused on training and coaching my team" wasn't classy either. And as for suggesting that he 'doesn't complain'??!! You haven't got him mixed up with Martinez have you?

I agree with Wenger's stance here. As a United fan I enjoy the competition because I see it's value in developing young players. I think Wenger also asked in this press conference: "if I don't play the youngsters in this competition, when will I play them?" He has a point. We've probably all lavished praise on Arsenal's youth this season but these players must learn somewhere. I remember United going to Port Vale in the League Cup in 1994 and after the traveling squad was announced the day before, people complained that United weren't taking the competition seriously. United won 2-1, Scholes scored twice on debut and I think the likes of Beckham, Neville and Butt all played, gaining valuable experience that would serve them well as their careers progressed. I think Wenger's policy will serve his team better in the long run. City on the other hand have a short-term mentality and probably see this competition as the first chance to have some return on their vast spend.

ps - I don't exactly think that Hughes has been particularly gracious this season, for example after the United defeat. It's amusing seeing managers taking the moral high ground of things they are equally as guilty of.
