I suspect they realised that too many Liberal Democrat MPs would be caught by the £1m level so they raised the threshhold a bit to prevent themselves being caught by this additional tax..

Yes, it was symptomatic of the time: new and easy money being thrown at something glittery but lacking substance.

I would add: anyone clueless enough to buy a very expensive house built on sand deserves all the financial bad luck that is undoubtedly coming their way!!!

Im afraid your "wealth" that is turning to dust in front of your eyes, as it is for so many of us, was only ever there because of the smoke and mirrors act politicians and bankers have been pulling for the last god knows how many years.

That "wealth" was never really there.

Rising property values, increasing pension pots, ever-upward stock market indices, profit growth - it was only an illusion, magiced by the easy credit era and the bluff of said ignorant (crooked even?)politicians and bankers.

And as for claims that there are never any true smart money people, well there are. Lots of them. They are the ordinary men and women of this parish who foresaw this house of cards tumbling.

So, yes, it is tough to see your "wealth" disappearing. Just console yourself with the fact it was never really there in the first place.....

You may not be borrowing to pay for your consumption, but you will need to borrow to pay the taxes levied on just about anything the Govt can think of, including the air you breathe!!

Come on Dempster, you can do better than that:

To compensate for reduced tax revenues due to falling profits, the Govt will just increase the tax rate.

And when things get so bad evereyone is making losses, they will just tax those as well.

Easy peasy..........

Yup, that's just about what Dubai boils down to. The one thing it can do is date palms. No oil, no fresh water (it's all tanked in or desalinated sea water - very expensive to produce). Everything you use or consume in Dubai (apart from a few dates) has been imported into the country. No surprise then that when the financial and property markets stutter, Dubai collapses.

Anyone want any sand...or dates? Going cheap....

Dubai not too big to fail? 9:50pm on 26 Nov 2009 So are we looking at a second phase of UK bank bail outs by the taxpayer? Even though, since the last rescue, the bankers have continued to pay themselves million pound salaries and mega bonuses "because they're worth it".

Please, someone, tell me I have got this hopelessly wrong?
