I know you're a big fan of Johnny Greenwood's soundtrack to There Will Be Blood and of Mark Knopfler's Local Hero score but what other soundtracks are you fond of? Personally I love strange music scores particularly the music from The Devils, El Topo, Eraserhead, The Wicker Man, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Blade Runner and Daisies.

Just like Sean Connery's accent isn't Scottish, Werner's accent isn't German, it's Herzogian.

5 Live: Kermode and Mayo's Weekly Film Review 10:24pm on 22 Jan 2009 Now that you mention it I agree about the daughter, her character was one dimensional and you never really understood what happened in the past between her and Ram. That being said it wasn't really about the linear and predictable storyline, or Ram's past, it was about the themes of redemption and happiness and how the two performers found these emotions in and out of their work. That's what I thought anyway.

I don't know how much you read, watch or listen to the Good Doctor but U23D, which claims to virtually take the audience on stage with the band, is his idea of hell. Mine too actually, I couldn't stand to be near that half-sunglasses half-man.

I went to see The Wrestler yesterday and it is definitely worth all the hype. It's a simple story well told in a gritty and realistic style that suits Aronofsky perfectly, it's moving, it's funny and the fight scenes are nice and fleshy but they also bring meaning to Mickey Rourke's character. He will rightfully win the Oscar.

I completely agree with you there about 3D. At the moment the technology only really allows 2 plains - the background and the foreground with the 3D objects in the foreground spinning out of the screen in front of the background. To be truly 3D the whole image needs to envelope you and that's something that can already be found in well photographed 2D films with a good director at the helm.

Maybe Avatar will be different, we'll just have to wait and see but saying that I don't think the technology will move away from genre cinema, such as James Cameron's big sci-fi epics or horror films such as My Bloody Valentine as the whole reason to watch 3D is for the visual effects to pop out of the screen, something that you don't often see in low key dramas. One drama I'd love to see in 3D is The Wrestler. Imagine Mickey Rourke leaping out of the screen into the audience with nails, barbed wire and blood splatter everywhere. There's also Marisa Tomei's various stripteases...
More Points of You: Part One 07:12am on 20 Jan 2009 Hi Mark, I was browsing the IMDb boards, particularly for your page, when I came across a discussion about your best rants. All the classic Kermodean quotes were mentioned but a few people said that they hoped for a remake of The Exorcist just to hear what you had to say about it. Tweekum on the IMDb says, "Exorcist Movie Directed by Michael Bay from a screenplay by the Wayan Brothers, staring Julian Sands, Val Kilmer and with Gwyneth Paltrow as Regan (her head will be digitally added to a child's body à la Little Man, rated 12A... I just hope he doesn't read this or he might have a breakdown just thinking about it." What DO you think?
