  The publishing industry is certainly feeling the pinch of online media.. the introduction of the likes of Kindle and the already ubiquitous presence of news on the Internet leaves print publishers even worse off than the music and film industries. They have to contend with legal channels destroying their business models in addition to the already readily available copies of pirate books available in PDF format all over the internet.
  
  @synthil - technology doesn't live in a world of its own - believe it or not politics does affect the technology space significantly - from poor telecoms policy decisions stunting access to Internet in some countries to piracy laws that stifle tech innovation in others.

We can only wish for this kind of monitoring and surveillance to help control crime in South Africa - most people in Johannesburg certainly would willingly sacrifice high levels of personal privacy in exchange for safety and security.
  
  Now, if only MI5 could come up with a new type of camera that could detect and record [Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator] corruption in South African government - now that would definitely raise an uproar on privacy issues in Pretoria!

  It seems from your article above that the UK approach is a lot more transparent and likely to burden the UK taxpayer a lot less than the current path the US bailout strategy is on.
• China's moment 8:12pm on 26 Jan 2009 I agree with your post however I am less optimistic that China will choose either the devaluation or revaluation paths you suggest.
  
  Holding down the value of their currency benefits China and China hasn't been a country that that is well noted for any altruistic behaviour. Any rise of China's currency to something resembling its fair market value would imply a downward adjustment of their own expected growth rate... now why would they do that if they did not absolutely have to? Certainly not to curry favour with the USA or Obama - they don't need to right now.

  While I understand your decision and the appreciate the factors that lead to it, I do hope you will review your stance soon. • DC countdown 1:44pm on 22 Jan 2009 dotconnect - not quite so harshly but I have to agree with you on this point. The excessive commentary certainly took away from the actual ceremony for me. Overall though I have to say I appreciated the BBC coverage of the US elections.
  
  Rome, think you'd enjoy the Obama inauguration cartoon published on the Wonkie blog - I wonder if the inauguration will mark the end of the Obamamania frenzy the media seem to have gone beserk with the world over.

  Olga (comment 143) and S42Wolf (147), I think you've hit the nail on the head. Most readers, particularly those using the Internet, are sophisticated enough to distinguish between fact and opinion. As such, I think the BBC has done a good job of differentiating between the two on their website.
  
  The BBC blogs covering topics such as the Gaza conflict and US elections serve the public well in allowing readers to supplement factual news and background Q&A with informed opinion to help readers form their own perspective. I make frequent reference to both BBC news and these editor blogs on our political cartoon blog and have had no complaints from my readers about BBC bias or difficulty distinguishing between fact and opinion.
