Your insightful blog has kept me informed about my country. And yes, I do think that it is very sad that a year after the earthquake, officials are still not acknowledging their mistakes and failures. I love my country, but events such as this still pains me as my mother grew up in Sichuan province and my uncle and his family still lives there.

as an oversea Chinese who have backpacked through remote areas of Tibet, I can say that the Communist Party have done some terrible things, but also good things as well such as communications and road building. There needs to be a balance to everything.

As an oversea Chinese who believes in Christianity, I still have much respect for COnfucius. His sayings are universally applicable and it's a good belief for the people in China. The university I will be attending, Texas A&M University, also has a Confucius Institute. Seems like it's not just a Chinese thing =)

as an oversee Chinese who have travelled extensively and have backpacked through many remote areas of Tibet, I can say that the Chinese suppression is still existent and am glad that you brought to light the issues surrounding Chinese occupation of Tibet. I love Tibet, the people, and hope that political and religious freedom can come soon to the humble people of the plateau.

I was backpacking through rural Amdo and Kham Tibet in Sichuan and Qinghai province in the summer of 2007, and despite the negativity China receives from the Western media about Tibet, China did do some good things for Tibet. For example, infrastructure, education, and communication has greatly improved since the Chinese takeover. On the other hand, however, I talked with lamas and monks who witnessed the Chinese burn down their monastery during the cultural revolution during the 60s and 70s as well as the killing of innocent Tibetans during those tumultuous periods. I think that all views must be balanced, and know that there are good and bad to every side.

Petitioners protest in Beijing 9:17pm on 14 Jan 2009 Hey James, your blog is very insightful, and as a Chinese (who is a Japanese citizen) living in the US, and having travelled inside China extensively, I find your observations very intriguing and you actually blog about many things I haven't noticed before..

and on the post, the Chinese people have always had a hard time getting justice and hopefully the government will do something about this ASAP, otherwise I feel that discontentment will spread and it will be hard to contain then..
