A prize deserved? 10:13pm on 09 Oct 2009 The Nobel prizes for Physics, Chemistry and Medicine are generally awarded after the scientific work has been proved and generally accepted. This is more difficult for the Peace Prize, which is by its nature more subjective and political. I think the prize is devalued when it is awarded too early, before a mature view has had time to form. Consider the achievements of Norman Borlaug, who received the Peace Prize in 1970 and who died recently. His achievements in feeding hundreds of millions of people are worthy of such an award. If Barack Obama can achieve even a fraction of that, his prize will be well-earned. I hope he can but I think it is too early to judge.
Is the green movement part of the problem? 9:26pm on 24 Mar 2009 I'd like to hear a Greenpeace activist explain to a poor farmer that he can't have plants that need less fertiliser to grow. The population is increasing. If we don't grow higher-yielding crops we either have to plough up more land or people have to starve. Any volunteers from Greenpeace to stop eating?
End of the British carrot? 9:03pm on 13 Jan 2009 We must base decisions on how to feed people and protect the environment on good science. The UK government opposes the new EU bans for that reason. Why can we feed over 6 billion people today? Why do we live longer healthier lives? We are not being poisoned.

On DDT: it is almost impossible that the contributor's father was killed by DDT as it has very low toxicity to mammals. DDT is also very beneficial to prevent malaria when sprayed in tiny doses on the inside walls of buildings. Get the science right.

Crop protection chemicals must pass much more extensive and stringent tests than medicines. Coffee is much more dangerous. Plants are all full of natural pesticides - that is why they don't keel over and die. We are all made of chemicals too. Get the science right.
