Many thanks for sharing your stories with us in the last years. It really opened up our insights. Although some people tend to disagree and often argue against your thoughts, the process of intermingling and repercussion of ideas has created a great platform for bringing China forward on its goal to becoming the world's superpower, aka "the awakening of the sleeping giant". Once again, my sincerest gratitude for presenting to us this blog. A brilliant observer and writer as you are, you have truly served the virtues of journalism.

When does old age begin? 10:36am on 19 May 2009 James, well written article, especially the last bit on the deprivation of freedom and hair dyes. Unlike what some Chinese might say, I believe u have a firmer grasp of Chinese culture and social characters than most Chinese, home or abroad.
US and China's verbal duel 12:15pm on 26 Mar 2009 One key difference between PLA and defense forces of other nations is that PLA is sworn oath first to the protect the party, country and people. Party comes first before everything else. Thats why its such a reliable backing to the current communist regime. People have called for changes to 'nationalise' the army but to no avail. All such demands have been turned down by high ranking army officials.

whoever said this should be condemned by all Chinese people. Just look at how angry the chinese crowd was when the japanese PM visited Yasukuni Shrine. Because they dont want their descendants to forget about the past tragedies. Yet they say they dont care about the deeds by the communists? Is this double standard in action?

Just ask any Germans around you and see if they dont 'care' about the Nazis' rule?
Whispers of the Dalai Lama 12:04pm on 12 Mar 2009 Its quite pathetic how China's communists are treating its Tibetan affairs different from the mongolian issue. Outer Mongolia was granted independence in 1949 due to pressure from the Soviet Union. Too bad Dalai Lama sided with the British and Indians instead otherwise he would have let independence as well with a demand from Stalin, whose decisions Mao would listen to with all due respect.
Competitive elections in China? 11:35am on 10 Mar 2009 zickyyy: if u look at Wu Bangguo's speech, you can see that he openly criticised the system of having three independent branches of gov't as well. Unfortunately today its not merely the matter of democracy but anything relate to political/social reforms get condemned by these communist leaders.
Competitive elections in China? 11:24am on 10 Mar 2009 Wen Jiabao used to be a protege of Zhao Ziyang, former secretary-general of CCP who was stripped of his titles and put under house arrest after showing symphathy to the Tiananmen square protests in 1989. Based on the link provided, the CNN interview seems to give a clear hint that Wen is a more liberal minded politician in China today. Sometimes its simply too powerless for these people to have any influence in the communist politics in the country, which is controlled mainly by more conservative people.

The wrong side of history 4:36pm on 21 Jan 2009 wzqings1: ur tax went to James? then u must be british. Well if u are a british national of chinese descent, u should note that James never criticises chinese. He merely points out problems of the ruling communist party. Communist Party and China are two totally INDEPENDENT concepts. Please tell us that u agree with this. I m chinese by origin too but i certainly dont take any of the so-called China criticisms as personal insults, they are merely directed to the chinese government, which is not elected by me and certainly does represent me anyway. As long as i dont hear racist remarks i dont think anything is a direct insult to the chinese as an ethnic group. And of course u said u are not a communist supporter so your sayings appeared to be self-contradictory to me.
The wrong side of history 4:21pm on 21 Jan 2009 It seems like the case for a lot of Chinese that a person must be anti-China (and is evil and should be redeemed) if he/she criticises the ruling communist party, even indirectly. So the basic idea is when the party does something, good or evil, its taboo to criticise not only the party but also the thing it did. Thats why many "china-supporters" (actually communist party supporters to be precise) here appeared to be just as agitated as Hu and Wen when Obama condemned evil regimes silencing and cheating the average ppl in his speech, although he didnt mention any names. (its like put urself in the spot u belong to when not asked to)
