Me and Me and Orson Welles 4:30pm on 28 Nov 2009 I thought Drag Me To Hell would be an unusual choice but it seems I have company. Definitely the most satisfyingly entertaining film I've seen this year.

Coraline also deserves a mention, I thought it was really underappreciated.

Call of Civic Duty 2 5:53pm on 17 Nov 2009 Once again the people making the fuss have neither played the game nor even bothered to do the most basic research. The BBFC report, which can be easily found on their website, states that the game on the whole contains a level of violence that would place it as a 15 certificate. The sole reason for its 18 certificate is the controversial airport mission, which can be skipped (and the game features quite a strong warning about). So the people calling it 'one of the most violent games ever' or other such nonsense don't know what they're on about.

The people complaining about the aiport mission may have a point that it's possibly in bad taste or misguided or whatever. However it is again obvious that it's a case of 'I haven't seen this film/played this game, but...', as I've seen many such people describe the mission in such a way that it's obvious they haven't played it.

It's interesting that someone mentioned horror comics. I actually saw a church minister on TV last sunday morning saying something along the lines of 'well in my day there was a lot of fuss about horror comics and of course that was all very naive and silly, but that was different!'.

This reminds me of an argument that I seem to remember the Dr making himself on TV many years ago. Essentially what a lot of the people complaining about it are saying is 'I am intelligent enough to realise that real violence is abhorrent and obviously I would never copy it or identify with it, however other people, especially those who play video games, are obviously not as intelligent or sensible as me and therefore should not be trusted'.

One final point, the idea of showing a jury Driller Killer at 9am in a courtroom is very much like what has happened with the recent 'furore' over jokes made by Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle (and going slightly further back, Stewart Lee). Without the context of the routine and the setting, or the delivery of the comedian, of course a joke is going to seem inappropriate, especially when a reporter tells it coldly over the phone to someone whose son has just been killed or injured at war. It is to completely misunderstand the context, just like when a tabloid describes scenes from a film or a game out of context to make them sound far worse than they really are.
The ten-second vampire movie 5:47pm on 28 Oct 2009 I have to admit I've never particularly enjoyed anything vampire-related that I've ever seen, including, sorry to say, Cronos or Let The Right One In. Those two are probably the best ones I've seen but I still found them to be not as interesting as people made out. I don't know exactly why this is, but I think it may be something to do with the limited range of what one can add to the typical vampire story, and the number of stock scenes that seem to be obligatory in any vampire story. One such example is the scene in which a character who has recently been made a vampire first discovers that they're drawn to drinking blood - usually discovered through licking their own. Funnily enough this scene occurs in both Cronos and Let The Right One In, and both times in a bathroom.
Trailer Treachery 9:29pm on 21 Oct 2009 @MarkoosMuse - Well the thing is that Sweeny Todd was an adaptation of the highly acclaimed and multi-award-winning 1979 musical by Stephen Sondheim, so it being a musical was the whole point. I agree that the songs weren't very memorable, although I'm not sure they're supposed to be hit songs exactly.
Trailer Treachery 9:23pm on 21 Oct 2009 Bride to Terabithia I never watched because the trailer made it look so bad. I have heard it is actually very moving, but despite having read more about it and hearing good things, my girlfriend at the time still refused to go and see it on the basis of the trailer.

I guess any film like a Wes Anderson film will suffer in the trailer when there aren't any bits you can chop out that are funny out of context or without a big build up. Although it's not quite a trailer, Ghost Town is an example where publicity and TV shows kept showing clips from the film that weren't funny on their own (the bit with the dog mainly), whereas I found the film itself mostly very funny.
Trailer Treachery 5:55pm on 21 Oct 2009 East Is East would be my choice. The trailer made it look like a light-hearted, whacky comedy, when it was really more of a drama with elements of humour. When I first saw it, I hated it because it wasn't at all what I thought it was meant to be. When I saw it again, I actually found it funnier because I understood where it was coming from.

I was working in a cinema when Fight Club came out and they cancelled showing it after a week because literally no-one was turning up. I am sure that this is down to the trailer, which at the time gave everyone the impression that it was a dull and brainless film about a bunch of men having punch-ups for no reason.
The Revisitations of Doctor Kermode 5:07pm on 13 Oct 2009 There Will Be Blood is the first one that came to mind, and I can see that sentiment echoed here. I actually liked it the first time round, I think, I just wasn't sure exactly what I thought, but the second time cemented it as one of my favourite films. It helped to know where the story was headed I think.

The Conversation is another one, surprised to see someone else mention that. The first time around it just seemed like an incredibly slow and weirdly structured film, but the second time round it made much more sense. What's more, this was years later when I'd totally forgotten what happened in the last third of the film, so I don't think it had anything to do with having more of an idea of where the story was going, as is often the case.

Intacto is an interesting one, didn't grab me the first time round although I liked the concept. Later I watched it again and it was like a different film. I don't know why...

Primer was much better second time round. The film is so dense and so far removed from what I expected that the first time just left me confused. The second time I had at least some idea of what was going on, and in fact I'd read a bit about the timeline of the film, so it was more engaging. You could probably watch that film a hundred times and still not completely follow it though.
Music Lesson 11:30am on 26 Sep 2009 Spinal Tap's a great one t bring up as I do believe they are actually the one's playing the songs.

Yes it does annoy me too. One thing I've noticed is I've seen mime artists miming the guitar, and they'll move their 'fretting hand' in the wrong direction - that is, away from them to go up and towards them when they go down - they must know this is wrong, and I suppose are just pandering to what people who don't have a clue about the instrument expect?

Ditto to the point about live bands sounding fantastically produced in films. Ok a film like Bandslam is aimed at kids so it's not a big deal really, but I do hate in a film when a singer steps up to do her bit audition and suddenly she is blessed with the ability to multi-track her own vocals live.
Repeating on me 6:14pm on 22 Sep 2009 Yeh I don't quite think the not-wanting-to-get-fat-after-ten-takes thing really covers it though. The trouble I have is I never know whether the way a character leaves without waiting for or eating their meal is supposed to be, as you say, a different temporal system, or whether it says something about the character or their mood. Ok in most cases it's probably the 'film-time' thing, but it's still annoying!

I'll tell you what though, I don't envy stage actors who perform in a play that involves them having to eat something on stage every night.
