Overrated? 5:50pm on 15 Dec 2009 If you're the government - or generally, none too bright - you could have the following positive line to take on all this. At least the interest rate on our mountain of debt is no more expensive to us than the Kergis or the Argentinians.
On the other hand, in simple and reasonable terms a haulage company becomes less competitive if it retains bad drivers and incurs ever rising insurance premiums. The solution for the haulage company and the UK are similar, better drivers and political leaders respectively.
Role model no more 09:56am on 04 Dec 2009 This is of course interesting but the most crucial question is who is the best leader to implement a UK recovery from this financial disaster. A process amazingly not yet started. More than £800 billions of Government debt, a £23,000 burden of debt for each and every Britain.
Please will you and your colleagues endeavour to ensure that the candidates are rigorously scrutinised and understand that Britains' deserve and expect exceptional leadership from here on.
Tories bash the rich 10:37pm on 07 Oct 2009 As I understand it the current populist government has extremely incompetently allowed some £90bn and rising of unfunded debt to fall on the heads of the nation. Each point rise in interest rates will increase the cost of all debt by an extra £13bn.
Who ever becomes the next chancellor of the exchequer will inherit dreadful state finances and hopefully a large majority will agree that these should be corrected. He or she will have to get used to being very unpopular. This cannot be done with populist policies. Quite how the responsible media report such attempts will be interesting. It is doubtful that the IMF will have the funds available similar to its 1977 rescue of that administration, who similarly recked the nation's finances.

As recently as World War II the Nazi's tried to quantitavely ease sterling to undermine the economy of their enemy. How very sad that we now do it to ourselves.

The Labour party now knows that GB was a wizard as Chancellor of the Exchequer and now Prime Minister at 'nodding intelligently' about the strength of the nations finances, at the same time as being far out of his financial depth.
One has to fear the multiple risks of leaving him in post, not least to himself.
Mandelson and markets 10:53pm on 01 Jul 2009 On top of everything else and this week so far, identity cards and the Post Office sale expensively abandoned. This is yet another symptom of a UK government that is sick beyond recovery.
It is a pity that David Milliband chose to enjoy a few more months as Foreign Secretary rather than pick up the challenge of rebuilding the Labour Party. Is his star already waning? Can he strive for the greater good or is he another addict of politics, power and debt?

I fear these poor people in 'other parts of the world' live in countries where credit worthiness is not able to support a beneficial infrastructure. An infrastrucure that promotes the all important viable economy.
The current administration has failed to the extent that the UK is at serious risk of being no longer able to afford the minimum required infrasrtucture. It is, to say the least, a little bizarre that Parliament has forced the Speaker from office and left a sensationally failed Prime Minister in post. Could populism have crashed more spectacularly?
For the UK to save itself it will need to elect an exceptional Government. Failure to do so will lead to very challenging times indeed.
BT: Self-inflicted wounds 12:52pm on 14 May 2009 Of very small comfort to the rising numbers of unemployed is that an economic depression/recession within a 'democracy' does promote the opening of cans of worms. Even within the elected guardians of democracy, who did after all deliver what is turning out to be in part, the self cleansing 'Freedom of Information Act'.
Its not all bad as long as we retain a sufficient free and independent judiciary and press (not forgetting that Il Duce started out as a journalist) who keep the Mugabe types well at bay.
How big business copes with recession 2:23pm on 13 May 2009 To paraphrase the Governor of the Bank of England "no one can yet know if the UK will return to economic growth".
In the long meantime time the long term debt interests' of the young should be very far ahead of the short term interests' of politicians.
