No nudges, no winks 04:03am on 05 Jun 2009 So yet another government ends its days in farcical turmoil. It is not just the politicians. It is not even the parties. It is the system that is failing. Blair/Brown were elected by just 21.6 percent of the electorate. Early results from todays elections indicate that turnout is now below 40 percent. There is no legitimacy to our form of government nor can there ever be when every time more people do not want the so-called winners than do.

Whilst I have some sympathy for the 1600 small bond holders (84) I do hope this is the first glimmer of hope. Failed banks must ultimately be left to fail and debt default is the only viable solution in the long run.

Good also to see that we (the silent majority) appear to have won a landslide in todays elections. As the reporter from Lincoln has just reported, turnout was a surprisingly high 31 percent!

I do not presume to answer on behalf of LK but it would appear, from the occasional rail against civil servants and their pensions, that many anti-statists here at least have an inkling of who is to blame. JJ, you may well have scientific evidence that these servants are of lower intelligence compared to their forebears of the 1970s. If so, please would you publish it alongside their names, addresses and posts so that we can all become more enlightened.

There appears to be much confusion about the meaning of anarchy, its relationship with freedom and its manifestation. In many respects, JJ is correct in asserting that our society is more anarchic than it used to be and, further, that the folk at the top of the heap have, in general, taken advantage of this for personal gain. What is not so clear is how this exploitation is any different in so-called liberal states than under more statist regimes such as PRC etc. The argument of the libertarians/anarchists is anarchy/freedom for all, not just a chosen few. This seems to be missed by those who support statist coercion.

Despite the clear and present failure of the amorphous anarcho-statist system there remains, amongst the general public, a desire to retain the coercive mechanism of the state for the masses albeit with an extension of regulation to rein in some of the now-manifest excesses at the top. This desire is manifest in all the pleadings we see for self-acclaimed deserving causes ranging from the eco-frinedly through the save-the-dinosaur lobby. Conversely, few openly promote the old style man-from-the-ministry knows best form of statism. At base the choice is clear: any form of statism will be abused by those in power.

As far as the daily value of the pound goes, I care not provided that in the medium term it falls relative to my 1847 silver groat.

Smoking also prevents the more severe impact of swine flu. According to Lisa Melton at the Novartis Foundation it reduces the production of inflamatory cytokines. It also has been shown to statistically correlate with a reduced incidence of breast cancer. So, the smoking ban is yet another NuLabour intrusion into our rights that appears to be counterproductive?
Economic impact of swine flu 01:08am on 01 May 2009 Great news. The rate of increase has slowed. The pig-tails of recovery have been sighted. Our beloved Health Ministers seem to have solved the problem whilst on a day trip to Luxembourg. They remain concerned but not paniced and we are all safe provided the EU boosts cooperation. So there we are. We are truly blessed to have such heros at our helm.

Also Pestons blog is back up but noy yet accepting any comments on his May Day piece.

Perhapsthe explanation is simpler than an attempt to stifle debate. Maybe the moderators are all flexing off for the long weekend. Or maybe this is an attempt to coral debate onto Jericoas site, a form of e-kettling?

Thanks for the link to the Jenkins article, which shows commonsense and a sense of proportion.
Hobbling hedgies and bashing buyout boys 10:48am on 30 Apr 2009 Which means that the European Commission's proposed crackdown on hedge funds and private equity firms should probably be seen as an attempt to treat the symptoms of the disease, rather than the disease itself.

The disease (and I oversimplify here) was an excess of cheap money married to the greed and stupidity of banks and bankers.

So, the European Commission wants to crackdown one stage further down the food chain than you do? You are both aiming in the wrong direction. The problem is systemic. At its root the system requires debt to create so-called money and requires growth (at least in the money supply) to sustain itself.

Regulation at any stage of the process creates moral hazard. We need new systemic thinking not enhanced regulatory thinking.
