Britain lands key EU foreign policy post 9:49pm on 20 Nov 2009 If she's unelected, I agree that she doesn't really represent us. On the plus side though, she's not got any history to speak of, she's essentially unknown and has a clean slate so that might be quite a good starting position for this sort of role. I think I'd rather have her in the job than Milliband, or even worse Tony Blair as EU president...
Three-way on the MPC 8:55pm on 18 Nov 2009 I think the BoE has got to recognise that there are two sides of the economy.

1. People borrowing money
2. People investing it

Over the last 12 months the BoE has crippled savers. they need to rectify that by putting interest rates back up again, to a reasonable level (lets say 5%), so that both sides of the economy start functioning normally again. If savers are getting a decent return on the cash they've got invested, they're more likely to go out and buy a new car naturally instead of relying on a £2k handout from the taxpayer...

The economy is distorted at the moment, in favour of those with debts. It needs to brought back into a more healthy balance, even if those people and businesses with debts start bleating about it. If you can't afford to repay the loan you shouldn't be borrowing the money...
When and how to squeeze the budget 6:55pm on 17 Nov 2009 Tax rises aren't really the solution. If we're taxed more, we've got less to spend, so we buy less which either delays or reverses the economic recovery.

We could start by stopping the child allowances paid to rich people. That's the sort of crazy Government spending that we need to remove from the budget.

Then we could withdraw from Afghanistan, and save a small fortune...

Get them out a.s.a.p and let Khazi and Abdullah unite to sort out the problems themselves. All the time Western troops are in Afghanistan, they're a target. Take the foreign troops out of the equation and its a completely different ball-game...

The Tories have done a pretty good job of turning me off over the last few weeks. And its not really anything DC himself has done. DC would be a good PM. It is the attitudes of some of the people behind the scenes, incl at the grass roots that have really turned me off the Tories at the moment...
Plotters, quitters and fighters 5:56pm on 16 Nov 2009 The plotters are right. If somebody else were in the top job it would completely change the way I perceive Labour. The slate would be wiped be clean for the new broom, but they've got to get on and do it before it is too late.

Gordon Brown is actually David Camerons best asset at the moment...

So put somebody who's kept their nose clean into the top job, perhaps even a woman, and there's a real chance for Labour - electorally speaking.
What was that about teapots and kettles? 11:18pm on 11 Nov 2009 I found this tawdry business with the tapes sickening. It's not often that news stories make me feel that way. I've got a pretty strong constitution and never feel the need to switch-over if some sort of "health-warning" precedes a news report. It just goes to show how bad this particular episode in the annals of tabloid/chequebook (delete as applicable) journalism really is.
The real debate has scarcely begun 1:45pm on 10 Nov 2009 OK. Your post has made me feel some sympathy for Gordon Brown and it has put both sides of the argument. But I still think that prompt withdrawal, relying on Karzi and Abdullah's "Government of unity" to succeed once it is given a bit of space from the Western intervention coupled with that "Fortress Britain" policy is the only realistic strategy at the moment.
Googling the Gosport candidates, just in case! 1:09pm on 10 Nov 2009 So Gosport is one interesting seat locally. We seem to be saying in these comments that the "party machine" seems to be delivering more of the same, for one reason or another.

I see Romsey and Southampton North is specifically mentioned on the Tory blog today. That's another intersting local seat and the Tory Blog gives some further insight into how the party machines work.
