I am perfectly capable of imagining what the POV of a person in a story might be. I read books. That requires a degree of imagination. If you shake the screen up and down and round and round all you are doing is making me dizzy, making me loose the thread of what is happening and blurring the screen so I cannot judge the quality of what is being presented to me....hmmmm

This seems to be a trend which started (maybe restarted?) in battle scenes (Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan) to add an element of realism and has now spread into the disease of modern cinema.

Please stop! I have a headache just thinking about it.

As a father I want my children to be protected where possible (arguably the job of the BBFC).

As an intelligent human being I want to have the choice to be morally corrupted (or not) as I see fit.

At the end of the day it comes down to the fact that I should be the one who chooses what my family and I subject ourselves to. If as my children grow older they wish to subject themselves to morally depraved cinema going then so be it. It would be as much my failure as anyone else's. But if not me, then why should someone else get to make this choice?

The Culture Show: Screening Room 1:46pm on 16 Jul 2009 Have to agree with BenLidgate about POTC. The first film was, although not fantastic, a very reasonable stab at making a decent 'Summer Blockbuster'. The plot was coherent, the acting was acceptable and it held my attention for the running time. To say it was 'based on' a ride is hardly fair. 'Named after' I could have given you but Mark, have you ever been on the ride?

Now I admit that my expectations of these movies (blockbusters that is) is set fairly low so in the grand scheme of things POTC is a poor film, but a good blockbuster movie.

Off to see HP6 (that's Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince apparently) tonight, the sixth in a line of franchise movies, and I fully expect this to be an enjoyable experience and will be interested to hear what the good Dr has to say about it tomorrow.

The good doctor mentioned the popularity of Christmas movies. I would dearly love a return to the days when a good Christmas movie was 'It's a Wonderful Life' or 'Miracle on 34th Street' (the original) and not 'Fred Clause'. Although if they ever try to remake IAWL then I am quitting the cinema for ever!
Terminator Redemption? 1:50pm on 24 Jun 2009 Sleeeeves: I kind of agree with what your saying, but essentailly its the same point that I was making in the first place. The blockbusters have all levelled out and compromised to the point where they are all pointless action filled, plotless garbage (I haven't seen Tranformers yet, but I guarantee its the case there too.)

I enjoy being proved wrong on this, and indeed some high budget summer fare has done so, but the industry needs a shake up again (as per the 80s and the origins of the blockbuster) and McGeeeee and Michael Bay need to be rested. They are getting far too excited with the freedom they are being given to blow stuff up and shake the camera.
Terminator Redemption? 3:11pm on 23 Jun 2009 I was watching some children's TV with my 4yr old son the other day and was stunned to see an advert for Terminator: Salvation action figures!

If anyone wonders why films such as this are rubbish they need look no further than this:

It's because they have been filled with non-violent action to appeal to the young children who then pester their parents for the latest piece of over priced plastic crap that they can break and get bored with really quickly.

The marketing people are to blame, the summer blockbuster season is turning into a television commercial for action figures and cheap toys and we the mighty consumer are lapping it up.

Until we realise that they won't stop unless we stop going to the cinema and buying their spin off crap then we will have to suffer this garbage!

Does Wolfram work? 09:25am on 18 May 2009 I asked how long the longest film ever made was and got nothing after trying several different approaches to this question.

I then tried longest book ever written, with the same results.

In my opinion if you have to first work out how to phrase your question to get the right result, you could have found the answer with Google and/or Wikipedia.

This site is going to have limited appeal to Scientists, Academics, Journalists (and other resaerchers seeking facts), but will not appeal on the broader market.

I initially had concerns over the sources used to retrieve my answer, but on reviewing the sources used for retrieving data on my home town I was satisfied that this data could be relied on. And I was actually pleased to see that this data is referenced according to the Harvard referencing methodology (I believe) so this could be copied directly into any acadmenic journals and papers you are putting together.

So, maybe not for me (unless I go back to university to do a PHD), but I can see the appeal for certain individuals.
Avast ye blogarrrrrs: Movie piracy and you 4:40pm on 01 May 2009 Just to pick up on a point made about cinemas showing loads of trailers (and even worse, adverts). I took my 4 yr old son to see Wall-E as his first trip to the cinema. We arrived with a few minutes to spare before the start time in order for him to soak up the atmosphere...

40 minutes later the movie began, now I don't know how many of you know what the attention span of a 4 yr old is but it is nowhere near 40 mins + the running time of an average family movie. And its not as if the adverts and trailers where even relevant to a family audience. I appreciate that the cinemas need to make a little extra cash from ad revenues but please... If you take the piss with your entrance fees AND you take the piss with the cost of food AND you take the piss with the amount of irrelevant advertising beforehand, then people will vote with their feet and there is nothing you can do about it.

WE ARE PAYING YOU TO PROVIDE A SERVICE! We are not paying you to sell us something we have no use or desire for. Nor are we paying you out of the goodness of our heart.

I have just paid £14 for 2 tickets to Wolverine tonight! Heres hoping for a better experience (not holding out too much hope!)
