Winter survivors 12:29pm on 24 Feb 2009 You are right. I might not be Spring just yet, but the small signs are there.

Maybe the signs are more noticeable because we have had a 'proper' frosty cold Winter.

I can see my rhubarb coming up nicely, and thanks to the all the frost and cold my small vegetable patch has wonderfully crumbly soil this year.

I can't wait!
Spring awakening 11:18pm on 13 Feb 2009 Hi Alys,
This morning I watched a happy, chubby Bullfinch chewing his or her way through the buds on my small hawthorn. Strangely, it made me happy too. When I picked shrubs for my smallish suburban garden I opted largely for natives in order to attract some wildlife. I have had so many rewards and hawthorns seem such indestructible trees! Have your tea in peace, Bullfinch.

Today was warmer too, I found some bulbs popping their heads up and the shops are all full of seeds, pots and plug plants. Yes Alys, Spring is definitely awakening.

I too spent much of Christmas sorting out the veg patch. I needed something a bit more permanent so I popped in a nice brick path up the middle, with an arch to enter. I am really pleased with the results!

Then I moved some rasps and I hope they will take. Is it a good idea? They were coming up all over the place so I dug a few out and moved them to a new spot.

Best of all was 'my' robin. (How dare I claim a bit of the wild!) He started visiting me each day as I dug. I wondered what he thought about!

Anyway - I meant to just say I used to have a dog like yours, only he had eyebrows. Takes me back!

Any man who works full time and has children needs to be given a chance!

I love my garden, but it takes time! Often my back garden looks better than my front - I think I like the privacy of working there. Family too always come first for any working father.

Dont be bothered about what the papers say - it was not too bad free publicity!!

Keep up the good work. Love the Allotment stuff!
