I hate Christmas, but any excuse to watch The Small One again. I just don't care to know people who don't cry at it.
Bride Wars Revisited 1:59pm on 10 Nov 2009 Not seen Couples Retreat (no apostrophe, really?), but I think Bride Wars is actually worse than the films on your list. The other films were rubbish (not seen Dickens, so can't comment on that) and more than a little cynical, but Bride Wars just seemed so vicious.

The comedy was more mean-spirited than Bottom at its basest, and the whole thing swelled with a repugnant distaste for its audience, as though the filmmakers resented having to entertain us. Haneke and von Trier can only bow down to Bride Wars's achievement: it's a film that physically hates you, and you sit there hating it right back.

Yes, Transformers is inept, cynical and hateful, but at least after seeing it I only felt exploited. After Bride Wars, I felt violated.
Trailer Treachery 2:07pm on 02 Nov 2009 re:needley_1978. Yes! Alien 3 Director's Cut definitely needs reclaiming from the scrapheap. If Last Action Hero and Fire Walk With Me can be re-evaluated and redeemed on this site, then so must Alien 3.

Oh, and The Two Jakes as well, if it's no bother...
Trailer Treachery 3:38pm on 21 Oct 2009 I remember the trailer for My Girl, which made it look like a sappy, happy romantic kiddie flick, the kind my mum and older sister would love. I was a little puzzled, then, when they returned home from seeing it in floods of tears, honking about that 'poor Macauley'.

Also, the trailer for In Bruges nearly put me off seeing it, making it look like some bad-taste, Guy O'Ritchie gangster nonsense. Thankfully, it was a short-lived mistake, but now, when I can I avoid watching trailers all together. There are plenty of other ways to know which films are coming out.
The Revisitations of Doctor Kermode 4:39pm on 13 Oct 2009 There's the flipside to this, of course, in rewatching something you loved first time. I wish I hadn't watched Eternal Sunshine again, not because it suddenly became a bad film, but the experience of watching it at home didn't match up to that first time on the big screen. And have you tried watching the original Matrix again? The first 40 minutes are so slow they practically go into reverse.
The Bride Wars Challenge 00:40am on 02 Sep 2009 I've noticed something Bride Wars has in common with the other films on the list: blatantly, condescendingly targeting an audience and delivering the bare minimum in effort and innovation. At first, Terminator seems a shoo-in for the list, but in this light, I think it should stay off. It wasn't a bad idea: the future war from T2 with a little added Dark Knangst. It was just ineptly executed, but you can't quarrel with the intent.

I think the only film that deserves a spot on here is Observe and Report, a film so arrogant and odious, it makes me wonder how Satan got a copy of Final Draft in the first place.

p.s. speaking of odious intent, just realised that may technically include every 3D film released this year. Er... which kind of messes the list up...
Heartless in mouth 2:35pm on 01 Sep 2009 Seriously? Darkly Noon? The one with Brendan Fraser as the barbed-wire bound onanist and an embarrassed-looking Viggo Mortensen as a whistling mute? The only other thing I've seen of Ridley's was a godawful, turgid play called Leaves of Glass, so I'm a bit surprised to hear you like him. Happily, I've not got much pride to swallow, so I'll gladly watch Heartless with a clean slate.

Just to silence the nagging voice in my head that you just like anything with religious symbology, no matter how overwrought, please tell me you don't also like The Boondock Saints?
The Pirate of Cropredy 4:16pm on 19 Aug 2009 I've heard that Gilliam has been in constant touch with Depp, and knows first hand how much he loathed working with Michael Mann, and how disappointed he was with the finished product of Public Enemies. If true, perhaps this could explain Depp's reticence to work on further auteur movies, and his desire to go back to working on CGI snoozebusters with bland stunt-wranglers like Verbinski?
After all, why pour so much effort into detailed characterisation for a potential arthouse flop, when you can earn the big bucks gurning to a bluescreen tentacle?
As long as the words 'Orlando' and 'Bloom' are absent from Quixote's credits, I'll still be delighted to see it at all.
Loving Sandra Bullock 4:06pm on 24 Jul 2009 She seems to be a very reserved media presence. To my limited knowledge, she hasn't released a pop single, fashion range or series of whingeing magazine interviews about love and men. It seems the only place to go see the girl we fell for in Speed (oh alright, and Demolition Man) is in her slew of terrible movies. She seems to be the poor man's Julianne Moore, only with awful taste in scripts. Being a poor man, I say yes please!

Alternatively, on the subject of her kit-sheddage, that she has never gone full-frontal on screen maybe keeps her female fans feeling comfortable and her male fans titillated and teased. A little damning of the male gender, perhaps, but sometimes it's a fair cop.

(I am aware of 'Fire on the Amazon' and refuse to count it)
5 Live Interview: Willem Dafoe 5:32pm on 17 Jul 2009 I love the Damocles-like spectre of Body of Evidence every time Willem is interviewed in the UK. I remember him going crazy at a lads' mag interviewer who kept bringing it up, and couldn't help noticing the bristling pause at its innocuous mention in the radio show. By any chance, Mark, did you know beforehand about his aversion to that film? And was that pause as scary as it sounded?
