Did you have to squeeze past the 'elephant in the room' to get to this topic!

So, DC is playing his cards close on this one, we know his view, but declaring his 'what if' strategy to the world is not tactically very wise at this stage, is it?

Now, back to the 'elephant'and what should happen to Gordon now he has been caught out over the treasury leak!

I agree too, I think your analogy with Maradonna is a valid one. However, nobody has mentioned the 'Hand of God' goal which is what Maradonna will be most remembered for. Clinching victory out of the jaws of defeat by what was later to be shown on the 'replay' as cheating. Lets hope the referee has his eyes on the game and shows the 'red card' at the first sign of a dirty foul!
No-one can rewrite political history 11:08am on 14 Sep 2009 I think a quick look back at Hansard will reveal the PM making that statement on any number of occasions "The issue is that the Conservatives will cut current expenditure in real and cash terms. It is exactly what I said - Tory cuts, Labour investment." was more a 'mantra' than a 'sound bite'!

However, of course, we must remember that Lord Meddlesome will bit have been in the Commons to hear the PM say it.
MP who complained MPs lived on 'rations' is demoted 10:44am on 08 Sep 2009 A bit of a 'non story' for a blog this one. In truth, the whole MPs expenses, rights and wrongs thing has been done to death. So Alan Duncan said somthing unwise to a hidden microphone and has been duly punished. Yawn. Some claimed for stuff they were entitled to, but becuase they are rich are being castigated, others abused the system. Yawn. So what's new?

The whole expenses thing is a matter for individual MPs, it crosses all political party boundaries with some MPs, who I previously respected having lost my respect and others, with whose politics I disagree, gaining my respect. The only point at which any of this will now matter is on the hustings. Some will stand down, and others will have challenging questions from their constituents to answer. Some will talk their way out of it and some who did nothing wrong will be hung out to dry. All that I can say is that the election can't come soon enough so that the country can move on.

Ahhh, the old ‘anti wealth, anti public school’ ploy. A charge that can never be levelled at Labour, their current Deputy leader and previous leader to name but two aside.

What this sorry mess is telling me is that there is not one single ‘Statesman’ n ‘respected political or government leader’ (or woman to be PC) in our current government. And at a time like this we NEED a statesmanship not politics.

Who was it (Tony Blair I think - I’m sure someone will put me right if not), who said a year or so before leaving office that Gordon Brown ‘was not temperamentally suited to being the Prime Minister’. How right they were.

However, as much as I despise Gordon Brown and his government, I genuinely don’t believe he is a liar. He may say things that are not true, but, I believe he has always convinced himself that what he is saying is the truth. Could this be the ‘temperamental unsuitability’ that was being referred to?

The upshot of all this is that we now have a Government that very few people in the Country believe (and heaven forbid, probably in other national governments too), even when they are telling the truth. Every statement is taken ‘with a pinch of salt’ and every re-evaluation of the situation (which any good government should do) is seen as a ‘U-turn’.

We as a nation are left in limbo until after the next election – I wish Gordon Brown would just ‘do the right thing’ and call one.

Thanks for putting me right - as you say, he must have 'gone native'. I guess anyone prepared to tell GB that he is 'wrong' wouldn't get a look in!
PM prepares for the Afghanistan argument 10:40am on 04 Sep 2009 I am a fairly recently retires RAF Squadron Leader and know that Major (Retd) Joyce does not speak with any authority ‘for’ the military in many matters.

However, we are at war, there is no other way of putting it. As it stands, our government is not on a ‘war footing’ and is clueless about how to lead the country at this time. Make no mistake, this is about LEADERSHIP not POLITICS! Like or loathe their politics, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and even, to a point (although the case to go to war was not well made), Tony Blair demonstrated LEADERSHIP at a time when the armed forces and country as a whole needed it.

The fact that, as far as I am aware, not a single member of the cabinet has served in uniform is another sad example of a government totally out of its depth. If this really is a ‘Government of all the talents’, and in the absence of anyone in the Commons with the requisite experience, why have we not seen one of the Nobel Lords of former Senior Rank in the Armed forces, of which there are a number, invited to take ministerial office?

I't seems that perhaps many others have said much the same as me, but perhaps phrased their plaudits differently!

A good point, until recently I had never been 'removed' by a mod, but then had the devil of a job trying to make what I saw as a totally reasonable point the other day. I could not for the life of me see how it broke the house rules.

Although the SNP are a bit far to the left for my liking, as a proud Cornishman and a fellow Celt, I think this is one matter on which Mr Salmon and I probably agree.
