The Hitchhiker's Guide to Encoding: The Salmon of Style (Or how programmes styles can change your view) 12:17pm on 11 Dec 2009 Just as i expected we no closer to the knowing why BBC have cut the bitrate and how they can really believe the current levels are acceptable. This is another complaint about Gavin & Stacey as well Mitchell & Webb both had lots of motion blur and lack of sharpness.
I do hope that the BBC trust find that BBC HD is wrong and is not giving the license fee payers good value for money for a HD channel, in case of this I know some viewers are also exploring another area of complaint through Ofcom as they believe that BBC HD is not sticking to the conditions of the licesnse that they were granted as they stated that they would provide an industry leading service

But as others have said and what the majority of viewers want to know is why you are broadcasting at the level you are and how the BBC feel it is acceptable to broadcast a 2nd rate service and give the license fee payers what we deserve

Can you confirm who provided the Ob facilities for the rememberence service parade and also for Strictly from Blackpool ? I am surprised at nobody noticing the errors on strictly as they were operating with dual path uplinks from Intelsat and Atlantic bird if i remember correctly obviously something was wrong with the monitoring back in London and also by SIS in the HD uplink truck
Points of View and HD Picture Quality: a response 7:56pm on 03 Dec 2009 I have just completed a BBC trust study on interactive services and am also taking part in one about BBC One and Two. these are not technical things and are for the general public.

I think this is what is needed for BBC HD to give everybody who has an interest in BBC HD picture quality the option to make a comment and to give views. This of course is unlikely to happen as they will not want to accept teh results which will clearly show that viewers in the general public are unhappy.
Points of View and HD Picture Quality: a response 3:11pm on 16 Nov 2009 I do appreciate Danielle replying back to all the comments about her POV appearance, but has been proven a number of times the picture quality has dropped and as much as she would like to believe all these viewers can not be wrong and the number of people complain seems to be getting higher all the time as more people air their views on the drop in service. What I really do fail to understand is how she can ignore all the evidence and technical supporting documents that show the drop in quality is affecting the channel.I think we are all thankful for the additional content that we are now getting but we are not getting true value for money from the investment that is being made to commission more things in HD and producers/production staff are not getting the full benefit from the extra work they are putting in as the broadcast is not being shown as originally intended so by this lack of bandwidth/ quality it is letting the viewer and the reputation of the channel down.
Did anybody see the BBC switch concert on sun on BBC HD the picture quality was extremely bad with the encoder really struggling with all the bright flashing lights and movement on the stage with lots of artefacts and picture noise.
BBC HD: Interview with Danielle Nagler on Points of View 2:16pm on 12 Nov 2009 I have made a formal complaint to BBC complaints and the first reply was very unacceptable as the BBC employee had quite clearly not read my complaint as I had put about being a poster on this blog and on how Danielle did not believe that anything was wrong. All he did was refer me back to this blog which shows it was just a stock reply. I then replied again to BBC complaints to say that they had not answered any of my questions and how i expected them to read my complaint before replying, I further added the information gained from the FOI request and asked for comments on that.
I have today recieved a reply from them saying that the whole of the BBC believe the picture quality is good and how in fact they had market leading broadcast picture and technology which is obviously a very negative approach. At the bottom of the email was a link to say how to escalate the complaint further to the BBC trust which is what I am going to start shortly and further to complaint about BBC HD i shall also be raising the issue of the BBC complaints department as I believe they have failed to do their job to the required level. I do know somebody else with high level industry knowledge and support is taking the complaint via the OFCOM route as he believes he has the evidence and papers to confirm that the BBC are complying to the conditions that were set for BBC HD to operate as a channel and has supporting documents from programme makers raising the issue on how BBC HD is damaging the uptake of HDTV in the UK.
BBC HD: Interview with Danielle Nagler on Points of View 1:15pm on 09 Nov 2009 I watched the original POV on TV last night and have just watched the extended version online. It was amazing how Danielle could sit there and defend the picture quality and she acted like a politician in not answering the questions correctly as well as providing false information.
I personally did not expect any different from the POV I knew that was what we were going to get,One thing I do hope is that now this issue has been aired on TV that more people who sit at home and are unhappy with the picture quality will contact the BBC to raise their complaint as there is possibly some who think it's just them but can see now its a widescale problem
A day in the life of the Head of BBC HD 6:51pm on 08 Nov 2009 It will be interesting to see what Andy has to say about the sound drop outs on Strictly come dancing as they were very obvious even to casual viewers. I believe it was an ob unit fault,anybody know who provided the facilities for this ? There was a dual feed HD uplink from Blackpool one via Atlantic bird and another via Intelsat which ran at the massive 60mb imagine how clear that feed would have been.
A day in the life of the Head of BBC HD 8:46pm on 06 Nov 2009 As I have said previously there are HD OB units that sit in companies yards/lock ups for sometimes weeks at a time without going out to work so there is no shortage of equipment at present. It is all down to money and contracts as most productions/sports are done on 3-5 year deals so all broadcasters do not have the luxury of going round OB companies to get the best price for each event below is a list of who covers most UK sport

A day in the life of the Head of BBC HD 7:50pm on 04 Nov 2009 If anybody wants to see what SIS Live can do with a proper HD outside broadcast have a look at ITV HD this evening as tehy provide all the ob facilities for ITV sports UK champions league coverage. Which will be more than likely be using the same units as on sun at Cardiff for the BBC just the picture will be broadcast at an acceptable level.

There is quite a lot of content that the BBC capture in HD but only broadcast in SD for whatever reason BBC Question time and the Big questions on Sun am are both produced in HD by Arqiva using ob7 unit but yet the BBC choose to just broadcast it in SD.

It will be interesting to see if Question of sport goes HD once Sky 1s new HD sport panel game starts broadcasting in the new year. I think we can all understand that it does cost more to commision content in HD and the money available is not enough but they should broadcast things that are already in HD when they can.
