The Boorman/Tarantino Nexus 7:50pm on 18 Aug 2009 I seriously doubt QT had any say over how British TV producers decided to air the advert his latest film. As I understand it, in Finland at least it is advertised in it's full Inglorious Basterds title.

Which btw, which is it spelt wrong?

As to QT. Reservoir Dogs excellent (his best), Pulp Fiction excellent, Jackie Brown excellent, Kill Bill Vol. 1 good fun, Kill Bill Vol. 2 drivel, Death Proof good fun.

That said I won't be seeing Inglorious Basterds because I completely agree QT started to believe his hype and stopped making proper films. Like I said I enjoyed Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Death Proof but please start making real and interesting films again!
The Pirate of Cropredy 7:43pm on 18 Aug 2009 I would guess Depp has a lot of fun "making" the Pirates films, hence why he keeps re-doing them.

I've only seen part 1, which was fun but that's all it was. All the hype it got was ridiculous. It's just a "by the numbers Hollywood Blockbuster", nothing more and because of this I couldn't be bothered with the next two parts.
Review: Terminator Salvation 1:44pm on 11 Jun 2009 I thought this was really good. A million times better than the rubbish T3. The lack of humour (for the most part) is crucial in the Terminator world. Christian Bale and Sam Worthington were decent, the dystopian feel worked perfectly. I cannot really fault it. And I too was seriously worried about the choice of director. It's a well made B-Movie Action flick.

I agree with the previous poster, when it comes to Kermode's double standards. If it's B-Movie Horror he usually loves it but B-Movie Action, it's tosh.

Horror in particular is given a very easy ride.

p.s - How come last Fridays review was so short though?
What you walked out of 10:59pm on 16 Apr 2009 I'm happy to say I've never walked out of a cinema, part way through but did see people walk out of The Passion and also "Standard Operating Procedure".

Which I cannot blame them, it's a hard watch! I thought about leaving. Not one second is uplifting.

So far there's been nothing that interests me on 3D, AT ALL!

I suspect it will be a long time before there is, why? Because proper films sure as hell aren't going to be going 3D.

The sort of films that arthouse cinemas like show. None of this in-your-face nonsense, thank you very much.
Blog words: You, me and the last remake on the left 5:05pm on 05 Apr 2009 I second that Thomas Crown Affair is better than the original, which except for the chess scene is largely boring.

The Departed is a respectful remake, even if it's not a patch on the original (it's way too long for one) and it saddens me for all the outstanding work Scorsese has done, it's THIS that he got the recognition for.

Logan's Run is in definite need of a remake. Logan's Run has a fantastic first half but peters out to nothing in the second half.

Like you say Mark there are examples where remakes are very good but boy they're few and far between. Most film-makers who make a film from a remake seem to miss the entire point of the original film. All the nuts and bolts are there but none of the magic is present, which made the original so enjoyable in the first place.

Of course, if you've seen the original it's hard to have as much enjoyment for the remake, as you usually know exactly what is going to happen next. I saw The Departed with friends and the scene where the police of chief departs from the movie was of no surprise whatsoever. That scene is entirely lifted from Infernal Affairs. At least Scorsese (and the writers) significantly changed it in other ways.

I'm sorry to say "most" horror movies are utter tosh though. I don't have a biased opinion of horror though (sorry everything else you don't but horror you do) so maybe I can see the wood from the trees.

For every "The Shining", "The Exorcist" and "Event Horizon" there are a dozen horror tripe films like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the remake)" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)". I can act better than they do in that movie!
Another quiet spell with the laptop and you 7:14pm on 06 Mar 2009 Two things:

1. Waffle away! I cannot stand one sentence reviews. It's the fact you take so long to review films (and are so enthusiastic) which is why you're so fun to listen to.
2. Since when was Jonathan Woss a film critic? He doesn't know a thing about movies. Interestingly there's group over at Facebook asking you Mr. Kermode to replace Mr. Woss on Film 200x. Good idea I say.
