Brand Australia 3:42pm on 24 Sep 2009 When I was in London in the early sixties there was an advertisement on many underground stations to attract migrants to Australia. The main punchline was " In Australia you CAN!" and it showed a young couple looking happily at a nice suburban house in bright sunshine. However on some of the ads some antipodean wag had added after the CAN "become a wingeing Pommy bastard!"
So, whatever slogan is chosen, the possible add-on needs to be carefully considered.
When life on the pitch crosses the ditch 1:16pm on 22 Aug 2009 Although former NZ Prime Minister, Robert'Piggy'Muldoon used and was credited with the infamous IQ quip, he pinched the line from NZ journalist Tom Scott who (I think) first published it in the 'NZ Listener'.
Also #6 the immigration arrangements between Australia and NZ are in a sense not disciminatory as it is a two way street with Australians having equal rights of entry into NZ, rights we do not enjoy anywhere else in the world.
The true Aussie sporting spirit 3:39pm on 10 Aug 2009 The difference is that here in Australia we expect our cricket team to win, whereas in England you are surprised, happy, grateful and generally gobsmacked by your occasional sucesses.
Should Poms be denied the vote? 3:02pm on 24 Jun 2009 Why would anyone live in a democratic stable country for thirty or forty years and not take out citizenship? Why is there a reluctance by these people to commit to Australia?
Utegate: the smoking gun which backfired? 01:36am on 23 Jun 2009 Nick, it is worth noting that Prime Minister Rudd declared the loan of the ute in the gifts and financial interest statement that all Australian politicians are obliged to complete. Also the car dealer in question was not applying for a government loan but a line of finance for his car buyers from a company that was to receive Government backing during the depths of the GFC.In the end he recieved nothing. All politicians in Australia as elsewhere receive requests from constituents for help in dealing with the bureaucracy. The point that the opposition are loudly trying to make is that PM Rudd and Treasurer Swann have misled Parliament by saying the dealer did not get special treatment. Anyway thanks to opposition leader Turnbull this nonsense has now gone on for several days consuming parliamentary time when far more important matters are in need of dicussion. At least we do not have to contend with moats, duck-houses, and phantom mortgages!
Will the Chasers go to war on Rudd? 3:13pm on 21 May 2009 Nick, your theory regarding the political influence on the last election of Jones and the Chaser team is questionable. What influence they had probably cancelled each other out. Jones' audience was mainly older NSW/Sydney conservatives and the Chaser appealed to younger more nationally based ABC viewers. Nevertheless, the degree of influence Jones had with NSW State politicians and the then Federal Liberal Government all the way up to Prime Minister Howard was considerable. As well as the matters you mention, a major blow to his credibility was with the 'Cash for Comment' disclosure,which revealed he received a large financial incentive from Telstra for favourable on air opinion that was not identified as advertising.
Howard was an easy mark for the Chaser lads but to his credit he mostly put up with their antics with good humour or indifference. It will be interesting to see if Prime Minister Rudd of 'pie in the sky' fame can deal with them with similar equanimity.
Fortress Australia 06:50am on 03 May 2009 We live in a tough neighbourhood so it makes sense for everyone to understand that Australia is well defended and no pushover. I do not see a build up of defensive military assets as being a threat to any other nation in the area. With luck in the future we may adopt a foreign policy more independent of the USA, to whose apron strings we are currently tied.
Mile-high meltdown 03:25am on 05 Apr 2009 I reckon Kev should in future fly Qantas. The cabin service is efficient and I have never had any problems arranging special meals. More seriously, perhaps the RAAF VIP Flight should be scrapped, and a commercial airline contracted to do the job. Might contribute a few dollars dollars towards reducing the budget deficit.
Australia no longer needs you... 1:33pm on 16 Mar 2009 Skilled and other immigration should be cut back much more than 14%, not just to protect Australian jobs. Many Australian employers find it easier and cheaper to import skilled labour rather than offer apprenticeships or meaningful adult re-training. Large scale immigration in recent years has also contributed to a housing shortage, inflated house prices and the high cost of rental accommodation in the major cities. We need time to catch up with existing demand.

Regarding 'newsjock's' comment about 'Babcock and Brown' they were not really a bank-just a highly geared investment company that bit off more than it could chew, was exposed by the GFD and whose top executives gouged enormous salary packages during the past few years.
Australia - how was it for you? 03:53am on 23 Dec 2008 Despite strong performances by Brandon Walters, David Gulpilil and some of the supporting actors, this film reminded me that not all Christmas turkeys are table fare. The first 20 minutes were a cringeworthy caricature of Australia presumably aimed at US and British audiences. The film lacked coherent editing and rewrote history. The attack on Darwin was portrayed like Pearl Harbour with the addition of a fictitious Japanese landing. If Tourism Australia think they are going to attract visitors using this film, then they have probably 'done their dough'.
