What a suprise. You can't rely on "promises", you have to make it a contract so that if the countries deliberately slide away from their agreement they can be heavily fined (preferably the politicians personally - or even imprisoned). That's the only way to get realistic agreements on anything. It has to be like a business contract, such as if I agree to pay a company for a service. I can't simply not do what I promised.

Of course you'll find noone will commit in the first place if there is any hint of punishment for failure, because even politicians must realize their plans for cutting co2 emissions are a pipe dream. On the positive side it would expose the fact that governments aren't doing anything, rather than the current state where people think all these Kyoto-ish agreements make some difference.

timjenvey: The phrase Climate Change has been around a long time and is more accurate than Global Warming (which refers only to the temperature change). Hence the last two initials of IPCC determined over 20 years ago.

Does the BBC not cover propaganda "conferences" created by think tanks as if they are on-par with actual scientific conferences?

No? I suppose perhaps that's a good thing then.
A green inauguration? 12:31pm on 23 Jan 2009 The models predict warming of the antarctic, although less warming than in the arctic due to the larger water mass around the continent. It's also very geographically different than the arctic in other ways.

As for the speech, it's just a general speech addressing a whole bunch of issues briefly, we will have to wait for something more specific on the subject really.

The graph of northern hemisphere sea ice shows that summer sea ice has almost halved over the last century. At the current rate it threatens to hit zero in a year real soon.

This is the issue, and is why the dailytech's focus on global sea ice was beside the point. It was particularly bad because many readers went away thinking that sea ice had rebounded, recovered and was a non-issue.

The antarctic sea ice trend is only marginally upward, wheras the decline in summer arctic sea ice is a lot steeper. Antarctic sea ice is also not heading for anything remarkable as arctic summer sea ice is. This is why the media rightly focus on the real story of arctic summer sea ice decline in favor of the relative non-story of antarctic sea ice.

"Predict and survive" - or not 1:29pm on 13 Jan 2009 Re 35: Oeschger and others have published papers on ice core methods in stark contradiction to Jarorowski's claims. We should take Jarorowski's paper and ignore all these others when Jarorowski doesn't even work in this field? Not me, I am sticking to what the experts in the field have concluded. That is the ice cores are reliable enough to show that preindustrial co2 levels were below 300ppm.

When every year has seen a a period where global sea ice level has reached 1979 levels, there's nothing of note in it also happening in 2008.
"Predict and survive" - or not 8:15pm on 12 Jan 2009 Re 31: what is wrong with that analysis is that the earlier measurements were inaccurate, suffering from contamination. It's ridiculous to simply take the mean of all the points as Jaworowski has done. The smooth nature of the mauna loa measurements since 1958 highlights the flawed nature of those earlier measurements which are all over the place.

The Arctic Research Center have announced nothing of the sort because it isn't "news". Like I said - global sea ice reaches 1979 levels at some point every year. The long term trend is down.

The source of this "news" you are talking about is a dailytech article and this claim about 1979 spread like wildfire through certain sites.

I suppose if you got this "news" from a site such as icecap.us which had just lifted text from the dailytech article verbatim you could very well have got the wrong impression that something newsworthy had been made by the Arctic Research Center.

That's more like according to that abysmal dailytech article.

Every year in the last 30 years has seen global sea ice reach 1979 levels at some point. But the long term trend is down.

In particular the long term summer arctic sea ice trend shows significant decline and at the rate it's going it will be gone within our liftimes, let alone if it accelerates.
