Dunfunding 1:14pm on 23 Mar 2009 Well, yet another Building Society is on the way out. Its all madness really as the building society business model should work in the 'New Puritans' landscape being proposed for Northern Rock and B&B.

So if not The Nationwide then presumably The Co-operative might take a look at the books? They're a business with cash to spend and have a strong presence in Scotland.
Was Fred really 'the shred'? 1:56pm on 24 Feb 2009 The next F1 championship is going to be fascinating now that the 'global schmobal' ambitions of RBS are dead. Presumably the Williams car could be wrapped in a Union Jack? At least then it could act as an advert for the UK tourism industry rather than all that money whizzing around the circuits for no reason.
Has Goldilocks gone for good? 4:51pm on 17 Feb 2009 I tend to go beyond the numbers on these things and rummage around in what we know of consumer behaviour. UK consumers are not the same as consumers in Japan or indeed Germany. So unless there has been a sea-change in attitudes, the UK consumer with a 'tailwind of confidence' will tend to spend surplus cash in his pocket whereas in Japan the tendency is to save. If that holds true I would think it highly unlikely that we'll see a Japanese deflationary decade setting in here. Rather its going to be a inflationary rollacoaster sometime in 2010.

The case for bonuses 7:09pm on 09 Feb 2009 I think that's the key point. Some people are just living on a different planet. If your company goes bust you don't get a bonus. That's life and its called capitalism. No special cases. If my employer - a huge global organisation - goes bust, I doubt very much if I'll get much more than a carrier bag to take my things home let alone a shiny new rubbish bin.

FOI or E-Enabled Open Government? 2:15pm on 13 Jan 2009 Indeed. On the assumption that FOI is still in existence in a few years hence, its going to be fascinating unpicking 'who said what to whom' as the credit crunch unfolded.
Taxpayers' short-term loans to business 1:13pm on 13 Jan 2009 An interesting thread re. small businesses and unfamiliar brands that I've been discussing anecdotally with colleagues is the impact of business failures on consumer trust. I.e. people are becoming reluctant to make a purchase because they don't know whether a company will be in existence after the order has been made. If you can't walk away with the goods then there is now an inherent risk in losing your money (or at least a load of hassle in getting it back). This is epecially the case for less familiar on-line brand names without a high street presence, and big ticket items that have an extended delivery time such as a sofa or a kitchen. A viscous spiral ensues....
