Changes to international pages 10:47pm on 10 Jun 2009 No, no, PLEASE don't do this. Every day I make sure my site is set to U.K. There is a *big* difference in the presentation. If I can't get to the British version, I have just lost much of my reason for using the BBC at all.

And if I am willing to deal with items "not available outside the U.K." why do you care about it?
Executive rewards, for what? 12:52pm on 09 Jun 2009 For those who asked, there is clear evidence that high chief executive pay does nothing for the performance of the chief executive, but does attract higher quality junior executives to the company. Expecting companies to lower their executive compensation is akin to asking the fox *very nicely* to please stop eating the chickens. The only way executive compensation can be optimised for the country is to implement government regulations that limit all companies equally. Now what was I saying about foxes in henhouses?
Who has more freedom? 12:42pm on 11 May 2009 Having lived many years in both the US and the UK (and elsewhere), I realise that everybody thinks their country is the freest.

We are free to be loudly pro-communist in China, but not Europe; atheist in the UK, but not the US; anti-gay in the US, but not the UK. Does free mean I wont be arrested? That is how Americans define it. Or does it also require that my neighbours will still talk to me and my employer promote me?

In decades of living in the US, I have never dared tell anybody that I have never belonged to any religion, a triviality in the UK. How free am I just because nobody would arrest me? I dont feel free.
The real question about waterboarding 12:21pm on 21 Apr 2009 The lunacy of the argument that effectiveness is the only possible reason for the US having used torture should remind us of the arguments for burning "witches". If you don't have a conscience and you're ignorant of history, it's very hard to explain why torture is about anything but "making the country safe from its enemies".
American Exceptionalism 1:42pm on 06 Apr 2009 I do wish somebody would tell President Obama to refer to me as a Briton, and not as a Brit. There is a fine line between folksy and dismissive and this is the wrong side of it. I would never think of referring to him or his ilk as a Yank however he should choose to describe himself.

Nationalism may impoverish us 12:07pm on 10 Mar 2009 But it is way more complicated than that. The Indians and Chinese came from low-cost countries where there were and are few opportunities. They can leverage their dollars by sending them home to family and retirement. Put bluntly, they are cheap labour. US banks only hire token numbers of Europeans and Afro-Americans – and Canadians and Hispanic Americans. Now that Americans are just as cheap and desperate as South Asians, why hire people with poor English and a limited understanding of local affairs? The banks are still looking after their own interests only.
What happened to the $20 laptop? 1:16pm on 08 Feb 2009 Isn't this yet another example of maths-challenged journalists reporting on technical subjects of which they have not the slightest clue? The public has been mightily misled by such nonsense over the past decade.
Everything will change 1:48pm on 01 Feb 2009 As the man said in the first sentence, the visible start of the crash was a property boom, not a credit crunch. Despite the comment that this will never happen again, this cycle has repeated since the mid-19th century. Here is the complete order of events, starting in 2006 or earlier. 1) Profits from selling consumer goods accumulated into a few hands. 2) The wealthy treated property as a kind of bank to store savings since they could find no growth opportunities. 3) Consumers bought property at inflated prices in the hope of selling at a profit. 4) Consumers and small business owners took out loans based on their inflated house prices. 5) The banks noticed that we were all standing on air and panicked into refusing any more loans. Consumers spending more will start us off again at step 1. Banks making loans prolongs step 4. Now does anybody have any *serious* suggestions about how we can handle accumulated profits that does not involve repeating the cycle?
