Reading the Kindle 2:36pm on 19 Oct 2009 What bothers me the most about the Kindle is the keyboard. How many people take notes when they're reading a book? Not many, I'll wager, so why is there a fixed keyboard wasting so much space?

The people that do want to take notes will hardly be writing entire essays, so a virtual keyboard would suffice in my opinion. It's just wasted space that could be used to increase the screen size or make the device smaller.
The Sidekick Cloud Disaster 2:28pm on 13 Oct 2009 There's one thing I don't understand - why would it be down for a whole week? Even if the user data is unrecoverable, it doesn't take a whole week to get the servers back up and running.

From what I've read, Danger's system was designed with an array of many high-availability redundant servers, so this means that EVERY server would have to have been taken out by whatever it was that happened.

I also find it hard to believe that a company as big as Microsoft could be so lax with backups. They run Hotmail and Microsoft Online Services so it's not like they've never done this kind of thing before.

It just doesn't add up.
Chrome - living in a Google world? 5:58pm on 08 Jul 2009 My Mum uses her PC solely for the internet. She didn't think it was worth forking out several hundred pounds for a PC she only uses twice a week so she got a very basic second-hand one. It's very big (it has a CRT), takes up a lot of room and is very slow.

If Google can make this OS fast and very easy to use (and I mean idiot-proof), a Chrome OS netbook would be the perfect match for her.
Video Bay: A young YouTube? 7:30pm on 29 Jun 2009 The most popular defence argument during the Pirate Bay trial was "it's not us breaking the law - we don't host the content." This will change with Video Bay - now they will be directly hosting copyright content which will give prosecutors even more ammunition against them.

However, the fact they are using HTML5 tags is excellent news for standards-compliant browsers. Speaking as a web designer, I hope this will encourage people to move away from Internet Explorer (particularly IE 6).
iPlayer: BBC v BT 12:49pm on 02 Jun 2009 ISPs have traditionally advertised high speeds and large download quotas on the assumption that only a fraction of their customers would take advantage of it. If every customer used their maximum allowance, the network would grind to a halt. That was a risk they took. Now that online video and TV catchup services are commonplace, they are suffering from that policy.

I see it as a failure of their own business decisions so content providers should not be made to shoulder the blame for this.

Ok, jobs would go at foreign-owned companies like Corus but jobs would remain at British businesses. We've seen so many UK brands disappear off the face of the Earth in the past few months - let's try not to have any more.

In that case I look forward to you opening your bank statement and finding your money transferred to a bank in Nigeria. I, meanwhile, will enjoy my non-ActiveX browser running on my Unix-based OS that can't open .exe files.

Good old IE? This whole article was about how it is NOT good at all! And 36 comments above yours agree with that.
