BBC HD Channel Up To Nine Hours Per Day 00:09am on 23 Apr 2009 "BBC HD is never going to be a movie channel - Sky movie services already do that very well, and what we're trying to do is something different"
I don't think that the public expect the BBCHD channel to compete with the Sky movie services. It's just that a good varied content is what is required. An effort does need to be made to show more films, be it once a week or so, at least. It is usually not best to be different in terms of content shown on HD. Think more along the lines of what is popular in SD. Every effort is needed to film top rating BBCSD programs in HD if the BBCHD is to become popular. Providing something different at this early stage is only going to cause isolation of the SD and HD viewers. Best leave this until HD becomes fully established. In general, the content that will hook people to HD are sports, films and popular entertainment. Be very careful, or we may find that 3D TV will succeed before HDTV has even managed to get its feet of the ground!!
Good luck! Please don't turn this channel into a drab one, like so many other channels trying to be different.

I've recently written in a forum the following:

"Just wondering, we are all blaming the Fortec boxes for crashing, when maybe it's all down to the broadcast companies. As someone mentioned BBCI joining BBCHD. My box has only this week (23/03) started crashing when trying to view BBCHD. It use to crash on Luxe TV HD. However, there doesn't seem to be any problems there. I think the HD broadcasters are still in an experimental stage, which is the reason for so many FW updates."

Is this correct? Shouldn't the broadcasters work more closely with manufacturers of any type of digital receiving equipment?

A Christmas Present from the HD Channel! 1:22pm on 28 Jan 2009 I was going to say that the delay in audio was probably due to Andy’s speakers being over 25years old, takes a while to come through. No seriously, they are a good British built speaker, which probably knocks the socks off many, overly bright, modern speakers.

I don’t experience any problems with audio/video sync. However, I’m using analogue Component inputs and analogue 2 channel audio. Could it be your set-up?

Watched a film last night, don’t know what it was called? Seemed to have a lot of edge enhancement. I know that when CD first came out, the producers would artificially increase the high frequencies to give the impression of greater audio resolution. Now I hope this isn’t happening with HDTV.

Is there anywhere I can download a good quality BBC test card down to DVD?

I've calibrated the DVD input to a very high standard. I just want to make sure that I have replicated that calibration with the freesat box input.

BBC HD: Picture Quality and Dolby Research 1:19pm on 19 Jan 2009 Glad to see films are now on BBC HD. So have hooked my Freesat box to the Hi-Fi.

Watched ‘Sin City’ First impressions were pretty good. Great PQ. However, there appears to be some kind of audio compression, as the dynamics appeared restricted. This in comparison to my DVD audio output.

Is this the case? Or maybe it’s all down to my freesat box?

I've advised my friend, accordingly, how to get the best from HD. However, I was thinking about the rest of the population who have no idea. Little bite size screen images would start to filter into peoples mindS, sublimanally (No, I'm no Derren Brown!). Most domestic HD products have terrible default settings which are OTT, and not a lot of users understand that they can correct the image.

I still hear a lot of people saying they cannot see what all the fuss is about HD.

Just wondered whether there needs to be some form of basic tutorial for the general public with regards help on basic settings, brightness, contrast and colour...etc?

Reason I mention this, is because a friend mentioned he didn't know what all the fuss was about regarding HD. He said the colours were all gaudy, the contrast excessive...etc. The person in question has a high technology job position. I advised him to re-adjust the user controls to correct the image.
I advised him that the majority of HD set box/TV usually have these OTT settings as default.

Maybe some form of useful bite size "how to get the most from HD" text images could be squeezed in between the preview trailer loop? E.g. "tip" "Switch of any Dynamic controls"

You could have around 10 Bite size text clips randomly spread within the trailer loop.

A Christmas Present from the HD Channel! 1:47pm on 02 Jan 2009 You know what? There seems to be quite a lot of criticism aimed at HD production quality. However, it must be said that SD production has never always been consistently great.
Just watched SD Jonathan Creek last night. It was awful!! (Never been a Jonathan Creek fan, I was forced to watch it. So no idea if this is the norm? I don't think the poor image quality was deliberate) the story line, however, was good.
I see HDTV as a standard to bring back the great (and c**p) SD images we were use to on our CRT TVs, with a lot more detail. If the production quality of a program sucks then you will just have to suffer it and hope the scripting is good (Or should we? Queue licence fee screams!).

Using the broadcasted SMPTE colour bars and Test card has given me terrific HD image quality. However, the SD images are looking stunning as well!!!

I adjusted the greyscale\gamma using professional calibrating tools for the input that I run the Freesat box on, as you require 10% windows for plasma displays.

With regards the issues of the colour filters. They will not always comply with the primaries of the phosphors or LCD blue filter used for your display (Not to mention decoder errors!). Therefore, you will always end up with some discrepancies.

The Filter is there only as guidance, as even if you adjust the blue to this setting, you may find yourself with 'red push' giving poor flesh tones

If you have a 'Blue only mode' on your TV then use this for a more accurate setting. Otherwise, use the blue filter and then eyeball the colour settings.

BTW, I have seen SMPTE colour bars on freesat. However, it appears they have now stopped broadcasting them.
