Trailer Treachery 6:58pm on 21 Oct 2009 Some obscenely bad and misleading trailers for some really great films include.....

The Witchfinder General whose trailer makes it look like some kind of quirky and utterly ridiculous comedy......where as in fact it was perhaps one of the greatest British horror films of the 60's and definitely one of the most grim.

.....what about "Cannibal Holocaust" "Men Behind the sun" or even to a lesser extent "Pink Flamingos"

Do you have no love for these trash classics?

All feature quite famously animals being hurt for real yet all are great.....what are your view?

It was my suggestion for the best film Kermode.

That film quite literally blew me away. It was one of the best horror films of the last ten years yet as had no recognition at all over here (Don't even know if it was released in the UK)

It's almost like if a horror film is not home grown, from Hollywood or Japan then people here just don't care.

The same thing happened with another of my favourite horrors of recent years Michele Soavi's philosophical zombie flick Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man)

The film was released in horribly dubbed version straight to video with next to no advertising. And that film starred one of England's most loved actors Rupert Everett.

Why is it that English audiences (those who watch sub titled films) only seem to vibe with Japanese horror films......i find those films very very overrated.....where as great horror films from Europe either don't get released or get buried by the distributors.
Back in the 1980s Friday 13th was lucky for some 3:05pm on 25 Feb 2009 I would say the main difference and the reason 80's slashers hit home more is easy....

....it's all to do with the effects. C.G.I is no match for good old fashioned latex and strawberry syrup sprayed through garde3n sprayers.

Even though these effects were at times rather rubbery (even Savini's work at times). They were suitably grungy for the subject matter. Real violence is kind of messy and unglamorous. Not flashy and fast.

I mean look at the exploding head in maniac......now that's how a great special effect made rather simply.

Even the old troma (shudder) trick of hollowing out a melon and filling it full of burger meat and fake blood looks great compared to the exploding/crushed heads you see in movies these days.

This flashy editing/endless cuts trend that has been in vogue since the advent of digital just does not work in setting a sombre menacing tone either. Most horror movies these days look like MTV videos and trick the viewer into believing that they are seeing something much worse than what's on screen.

This problem really needs to addressed.

If mainstream audiences were to get hip to subtitles that would almost certainly mean the death of the "horrible Hollywood remake of the beautiful foreign film" trend that has been infecting the film industry as of late.

There will be blood is rubbish.

He wasn't redefining the language of modern cinema....He was making some arty overblown intro to a boring boring movie.....And if you are right (which i doubt) then he wasn't saying anything very interesting in this new language of his.

I agree with you about the assassination of Jesse James....the best film of the last 10 years...

..But you couldn't be more wrong about T.W.B.B......it was just a slow moving completely nonsensical story with a good lead performance and not much else going for it.

The snotty film students/geeks that inhabit this site are probably overjoyed by your praise of Paul Thomas Anderson and his new language of cinema and will probably be writing their thesis on this or something equally as pretentious.

But spare a thought for your drug addled fans that enjoy cheap nasty exploitation and review or give your thoughts on some more low brow films like Waterpower or Combat shock or Maniac or even Cruising.

You claim to have a love for the lower echelons of cinema yet all you talk about is oscar nominated films.......this site is almost like sitting in a student bar listening to "know it all" students talk about stupid things like the language of cinema.
