Talk is cheap 05:11am on 16 Mar 2009 To restore trust in and between financial institutions regulatory reform at national and international level is vital, the whole system only exists by virtue of rules and regulations the crisis can be described in terms of either the inadequacy of the regulations or adherence to and enforcement of them. As far as fiscal stimuli are concerned the avoidance of squandering any but the worlds renewable resources should be integral to the economic thinking and not supplementary to it and here more than any where international regulation and coordination is essential so that environmentally dirty players can have no advantage over their cleaner rivals. However we can only expect the G 20 meeting to give a work in progress a shove forwards and not expect immediate results, impatience withour dear leaders is important.

QE Day (2) 4:11pm on 05 Mar 2009 Seems a bit random, velocity is a vector not just how much how quickly but where it goes is it for ideological reasons the Government/Bank of England decide to launch all this money in this way?rather than launching it to do specific things as a customer to companies rather than a lender, it would still be launched into the sysytem but its first use would be determined as something useful like infrastructure projects. It seems like replacing one lot of fantasy money that the banks convinced each other they had with another lot which at best could take us back to where we were before but then commodity prices would rise again and reveal weaknesses this time in the form of rampant inflation.

RBS is no oil painting and by any standards failed whether it was entirely Fred's fault or not is beside the point he was at the helm and should have done the honourable thing. We need to think more carefully about what virtues to seek in our captain's of banks, determination may be one of them, there are several others. There seems to be an assumption that some of these virtues are inevitably accompanied by vices such as greed but we need to distinguish between legitimate self interest and greed. The ability to spout half baked philosophical gibberish is not a quality to be welcomed from a financial correspondent nor for that matter from an art critic.

A brief escape 12:08pm on 18 Feb 2009 Talking of delicious air, I note with dismay that there has been a severe slow down in projects to create clean energy about which the only subsidies the government is increasing are in the form of lip service, neither the opposition nor journalists are jumping up and down yet it is this industry that should be expanded not contracted now both to give a Keynsian stimulus and to provide a sustainable future to the"new "capitalism of the future.
Lloyds and HBOS humbled 6:11pm on 13 Feb 2009 Does the fact that most of HBOS' losses were from bad debts to constuction companies illustrate that the government should where possible support such industries directly by providing them with work constucting stuff that would make the Uk fitter for the future so that they could service their loans so that the banks would need less money from the taxpayer?
Total and the Wimbledon effect 00:12am on 04 Feb 2009 Seems that some of the workers of the world are united in wanting to work in the energy industry, could be a clue there as to where to put some stimulus package.
Blubbing bankers 11:38am on 31 Jan 2009 So glad that Putin was conciliatory and the Chinese have been re-reading Adam Smith for if governments intervene together it is certainly possible to solve the problem. Because this is a once in a life time occasion when massive government and inter governmental intervention is warranted and necessary to get the merrygoround going round again it is also an oppurtunity to try to correct some of the damaging effects it can have on our environment physical and cultural.
