You and many of the contributors here are too young to remember how the bonus payments in Industry eventually led to the downfall of industry in this country. The same bonus schemes have now led to the downfall and failure of the bloated financial sector.
It’s simple really pay a living salary to all, commensurate with their contribution to the wellbeing of the Company or organisation, during the financial year the books that show a profit then a payment is made in profit sharing. This payment being made six months in arrears, would again be commensurate with the relevant position and based on the annual salary, with 50% of that lump sum also to be added to each individual’s salary.
Believe me it works and works well, before we went on to that system we had 15% of the market place, after the changes we raised it to 65% of that same market place within 5 years.
So the solution to the Banking bonus problem is not that “Darling’s” tax initiative but a wholesale restructuring of the remuneration packages across this country.
But there is no politician in this country willing or has the guts to say what is needed to get us out of this unholy mess we are now in.

The only problem is that the current Scottish Government has the social costs at hand whilst the English are dragging their collective feet so far, the Welsh on the other-hand are trying to gain the powers from Westminster in order to sort it out there.

With the BMA, the Social work departments and the Police backing this move, why oh why is it the Politicians’ that are dragging their feet?

Could it be that with a General Election looming, they are looking to their future employment on particular boards, or the provision of augmentations, tax free, to their pension funds?
Anything to declare? 6:31pm on 09 Nov 2009 Come on Brian and the rest of you, after the Glenrothes farce, we are quite sure that the dead will vote in Glasgow North East.
With the figures already suggesting that the postal vote has increased by 20% on all previous elections, what is the big money on that the papers will be cremated within 48 hours “all a big mistake” “A big boy did it and ran away”
The Electrical Commission is already filled with placemen; they did not manage to do anything in Glenrothes do you really believe that they will be in attendance at the election on Thursday never mind the count, no chance.
Remember Gordon Brown charged all in the party in Scotland to make sure that this by-election goes the same way as Glenrothes.

As the business and economy editor, surely you could have produced the complete letter of evidence instead of snipping it down to paragraphs that could then be open to differing interpretation.
So we are to believe that the financial sector who if we are to believe all that has been written and espoused, have been found guilty of gambling with monies that they held in trust, now in my book that is theft and a breach of trust.
Douglas how about telling we the poor blankey blank infantry, why we should accept that same financial sector’s opinion on what is our future? When their past is such a mess of incompetency and illegal actions that really is the biggest disgrace over the past 50 years?
Measuring the Diageo fallout 3:32pm on 09 Sep 2009 The days when a bit of money whether it was in a brown envelope or in the form of a grant is over, attempting to placate or turnover a management decision will not work.
This type of management decision in this day and age will never be taken lightly, in this case Diageo had pondered long and hard whether it was desirable to start and put all their eggs in one basket. As in the development at Leven, of course if they manage to put a basket case in charge of the Leven plant well, there will be plenty to say hell mend them.
On the other hand Diageo could have done as others in Scotland have done, taken the monies offered and built a white elephant in Kilmarnock and run away in two years, just how many companies have done this over the past twenty years with the tax payer having no recourse?

Once more you swallowed the emotive hand wringing and bile never mind the usual hyperbole that the opposition ran with in this morning’s debate, can you remember far enough back to the days when you were at your mother’s knee in Dundee listening to the same drivel, I can and it still sticks in my throat.

Candidates running around the city in Ford Popular’s trying to be one of the people whilst their limo’s were parked away from prying eyes, yes Brian your memory must be giving you problems, when you can’t see the wood for the trees.
Devolution poll 4:15pm on 29 Jun 2009 So we now have the craziest of situations, we now find a poll which appears to create a totally new situation within the United Kingdom, a poll result that nobody actually wants, until you think about it.

This poll has now got the media and you Brian in a fix, you have all collectively been pushing for what you have assumed was what the people want, but now find that the people want something entirely different.

So we will have to sort this out, the people of Scotland want (note not wish) more devolved powers a whole lot more than even Calman is offering. But they want a bit less than the SNP want, they do not want Tory or New Labour not even Old Labour, nor do they want the LibDems offerings either.

No the people of Scotland want something that has been on the shelf for over a century, they want rid of one size fits all, what is good enough for London and the South East is good enough for the rest of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain has lost its Empire, it presented the World that it once ruled and plundered with a system that has been proved to work elsewhere but has never been considered here, so we now have the people of Scotland pointing in the direction that should have been the compass bearing we should have been following since 1945, what is it? you all should be asking by now, guess?

it looks like you have been trawling through the archives at the BBC, good for you. While you were there did you look for the 1950s and the election when Mr Stratchey stood in Dundee West?
Now there was a man, who just likes the present incumbents, only look out for themselves (expenses and allowances).
You see history does have a habit of repeating its self and with the population now having access to that great big filing cabinet the internet, we the electorate of this country do no longer swallow everything that any politician espouses.
A political career shelved 4:58pm on 17 Jun 2009 Now having been given the push for a paltry sum of £4,000 do you really think that Jim Devines moral compass will really point in the direction of resignation, when the arrow has defiantly been pointing at to your own self for all those years?
Should he resign, on this matter it surely would only open the floodgates, as the moral compass that is installed at Westminster is spinning so fast that it could power the entire establishment, or even lift the whole lot into the air and dump it in the North Sea.

Either way the Financial Authority does seem to have their dirty fingers in this one as well.
Never mind, as there will only be an elected House of Lords shortly, we surely can look forward to the fact, that those responsible will not be collecting the ermine as a bonus.
